Is this a quiet place to stay and still near the SL & HDR?
Can I meet girls at the SL & HDR and take them to La Amistad?

Thanks!

trains must make less noise in costa rica.
how can you be 20' from a track and not have noise?

Matt also employs crossing guards between 6 and 10am to keep the train noise to a minimum

I don't know about the trains and matt, just want some reasonably quiet sack time, sounds like HDR and SL are pretty loud. Since I have never been to CR, from my 'research' somehow I heard about La Amistad. If you think I can find a fairly quiet area in HDR or SL that's fine.

Hope to meet some fellow mongers from this site when I get there.

Since you mentioned quiet sack time, you need to know this in the spirit of full disclosure:

Amistad is quiet in the sense you won't have a party scene onsite going on at all hours like the Del Rey or SL. It's actually family friendly - couples, ecotourists and Tico families with Ch*ldren stay there all the time in addition to mongers.

HOWEVER... the deal with the train at Hotel Amistad is there's a commuter train track that goes right by the hotel (literally across the street). Starting at 5 AM on weekdays (no trains on the weekend), there's a commuter train passing by every 15 minutes.

Given this is Costa Rica, there are NO automatic railroad barriers and signal lights to stop vehicular traffic while the train passes, so the conductors BLARE that train horn when they approach the intersection... even at 5 AM.

This used to be a major problem until Matt, the Amistad owner, hired some guys with flags and visibility vests to stop traffic each time a train approached. Now the conductors don't use the horn (as much) when going through that crossing. But the rumble from the train can still be felt especially in rooms located on the hotel's east side facing the track.

Amistad has very comfortable and DARK rooms away from the tracks, where the train noise is minimal or practically non-existent. Ask for one of those. The staff will guide you.

HDR has no quiet areas, plus the rooms are horrible.

SL has many quiet rooms. Your best bets are a room in the Mansion or Clubhouse wing, or the Modern Wing's 2nd floor. Again, ask the staff, they'll guide you. Just stay away from the Courtyard wing.

Another option - the new Mona Lisa. PM Guy Grand on this site and ask for a room on the fourth floor. If you join CRT, you'll also get pretty good discounts on rooms, food and bar tab at all of these hotels (except for the Del Rey).
