Is there a similar site to this for discussing the hobby in Cuba?

You may find something in the "trip reports from around the worls section" but you should get a lot more from the site below:

Its been discussed from time to time - I've been there twice some years back; I made some posts about what I found and my impressions - you should do a search - just type in Cuba - I will tell you its worth going, but its a place you should really "Know before you go" :)

Saw the strangest thing yesterday at baggage claim in IAH. UA1822 had just landed from HAV and the bags were on the carousel next to ours. I've never seen a scheduled commercial flight between US and Cuba. Looked for rez info on the UA site, but no info.

Living in Miami, there are scheduled flights, but are limited to ethnic Cubans who have family on the island - you or I as non Cubans could not go (at least legally) - someday soon I hope they change a cold war policy in place since 1961 (?) that clearly has not worked

The irony of the policy is you could go as a US citizen - but are prohibited from spending money  You could also go as a journalist, part of a religous group (many from S FL went to see the Pope when he visited the island), or a trade delagation - but as a tourist......nope, at least not legally

Lots of ironies in that policy I suppose...

For Canadians it is easy...just hop on a plane to Cuba. I have not done so...but it is a huge destination for all inclusive vacations for Canadians. The cheapest basically.

Yeah, the biggest being the policy has not worked; Fidel (and his brother Raul) are still in business, and we do business with and have diplomatic relations with plenty of countries with repressive policies far worse than Cuba - Cuba, given its proximity to the USA, not to mention the Missel Crisis, and Bay of Pigs fiasco, plus being a pawn of the old USSR, has always occupied a special place in the "Perhaps we could have done that differently" department - the only good news is the hard liners, mostly old Cubans living in Miami, who have political power, and have insisted on this insanity, are dying off due to old age.

(While I understand their point of view - I hate clinging to a stupid policy that has not worked since inception in 1962, and being told as an American that I cannot visit a place legally - sorry, but living in Miami as a non Cuban you just get a little sick of the stupidity, and the news from Havana being reported as local - but in a way, perhaps it is) :)

Here's another article on Cuba today from a relatively neutral source (British center-right magazine). It discusses Cuba's economic and political reforms, and that they have stalled: http://www.economist.com/node/21562954

My understanding is that it's not illegal to go to Cuba, what is illegal is that you're not allowed to spend any money there unless you first obtain a special license from the treasury department. So, in effect, since it's virtually impossible to visit there without spending money (unless you are visiting a friend and they pay for everything, including your airfare (because paying the taxes for landing at the airport is not allowed) then you're breaking the law.

What this means is that if you have a cuba stamp in your passport, you will probably be under intense scrutiny. That's why Cuba will offer to give you a card with the stamp on it when you enter, so it doesn't go in your book. Lots of americans go to Cuba from places like Mexico and Costa Rica, however. Thus there is no record in the US of the trip.

More accurately stated would be they do not want to bother with you over such a minor transgression. If they really were interested just the mention of Cuba on this site as well as all others, every email, phone conversation, etc. could tip them off if NSA set their filters to catch the word Cuba. Big brother is watching!

Suba1, your correct us Canucks flock to Varadero, Cuba. 3 1/2hr direct flight from Toronto.
Its on my list to visit.

Trivia: Which country approached Canada in the 1980s wanting to join as a new province?
(Turks and Caicos Islands) :)

Even you do not believe that. Ninety nine percent of the U.S.population, at last count that is about 317,000.000, regularly use the word Cuba in their daily lives?

Oh, now I understand. You have taken your your hearing "Cuba" in your day to day activities approximately once every 17 hours and extrapolated that number to come up with the conclusion that 317,000,000 men, women, Ch*ldren, infants in the United States use the word "Cuba" on a daily basis.

Perhaps you should leave your government job and take a position as a writer for one of the many PAC's currently writing political advertisements.

Point being, based on my travel experience and the cbp employees that I run into on a regular basis, mentioning Cuba is a non-issue unless you are giving them more info about actually visiting.-

Glad we can agree on one point. That is why I posted
