Are there any quick trips near San Jose worth going to for a little different flavor with same or similar amount of action? Either quick plane ride or quick drive?

If you are looking for girls, the closest action place is Jaco - its on the coast; closest beach to SJ - its about 2 hrs, and the bus is very cheap - may be worth a night to say you saw it - be warned; Jaco is hot, and a dirty town; better beaches exist too - and the "action" is more abundant in San Jose.

If you are looking for a more traditiional tour, to see waterfalls, etc, as well as some of the country, the always popular "5 in one" or "4 in one" tours may be good - your hotel can help you - there is all zip lining - a couple of years ago, I did a zip tour outside of Cartago - the one in Jaco was better (and the one in Monteverde was better still) but you can check these out when you are down, or do a search for more info. A lot depends on you, and what you are seeking, as well as how long you are in CR - for a long weekend, for example, I'd stay in San Jose.

While I'm on the subject of tours, don't ignore the possibility of a tour offered by CTR member Bilko - you can PM him - another member, Pops, also gave great tours, but reports are he is still on the mend after suffering a bad traffic accident, so I don't know his avalibility, but again, you could PM him for more info - I personally know both guys; you could not go wrong with either :)

PS Not looking to read too much into your question, but Costa Rica is not a giant whorehouse - its abundant in San Jose, in the gulch, and to a little lesser extent in Jaco - but not in much of the country, at least not for gringos :) :)

If the primary purpose of your trip is to "play" but you want to see a bit of the country too then I would just base myself in San Jose and do the true day trips as outlined above. Most of the tours / trips will pick you up in the morning at your hotel and drop you off when the trip is over.

As far as Jaco goes, I've been a few times, had a good time but as stated above, it can get incredibly hot and humid. This time of year you won't see much sunshine and in a good downpour the streets can get flooded very quickly. The beach is one of the the worst in Costa Rica and both the sand and the water are pretty dirty. prices for food, drink, lodging and "entertainment" are generally a bit higher than in San Jose.

And for a day trip I do every time I come to CR, you have to try the white water rafting. There are a bunch of great rivers and this time of year they are really running fast due to the rain. There are a variety of choices, from relatively mild to crazy. Another benefit to the rafting trip is that you usually get to see a lot of the countryside as you go back and forth.

Regardless, you'll have a great time in Costa Rica.

Medellin, Columbia

But seriously, Most of the action is in San Jose, with Jaco a distant second. Outside of that there is no real monger scene. You might find the occassional local pickup, but it would more likely be a chance encounter.
