You should buy a prepaid SIM at the airport (in the luggage area). Make sure your phone is unlocked and is compatible with the 1800Mhz band. Any unlocked quadband phone will work.

I have a Motorola v551 that is locked. I am going to try and unlock it before I go to CR, but if I am unable to unlock it, will they be able to unlock it where I would buy the new SIM card in CR?

Anyone know of a simple backup plan? Last time I was in town the ICE booth was having problems and couldn't give out SIM cards.

Can they be found in/near the gulch as well?

You can stop at the one just past the entrance to immigration near a departure gate. I forget exactly which gate, I am sure a brother can help you out there.

Have not found one in the gulch except going to the ICE office near San Pedro Mall.

there is a new company in CR offering pre-paid cell sevice....fullmovil. it works just like ICE (need unlock phone, 1800 mghz frequency etc). I see them being sold at many convenience type stores in SJ. Look for a small orange sign.

There is a ICE desk near gate 7 (I think). You can try there first because once you clear immigration and get into customs, you will not be able to go nback upstairs if they don't have any SIMS or are having issues.

As far as buying it near the gulch... there is an ICE office across the street from Sabana Park. I don't know if that's the closest one but that's one that I know of. Expect the wait time there to be up to an hour and you will need to ask in Spanish.

There is an ICE office on calle 3 just south of avenida segunda. As a landmark the National Theater and the Gran Hotel de Costa Rica are at that intersection.

This new prepaid cell company sounds good. It seems that the SIm will not expire aftre 30-60 days like with ICE. And the rates are about the same. And you can choose your own number on the web.

Orange, that'll renewal thing will be the clincher for me, avoid that pain, not understandable when I have plenty of money in the account, other than a mini scam.

Actually, the SIM doesn't expire with ICE, it just becomes inactive. Once you recharge it with like 500 colones, it becomes active again and you keep the balance that you already had.

8ball, sorry for our differences but let by-gones go. I hope you're right, I have three numbers down there and am renewing with masterpago but if you're right, that'll save me a monthly pain. Thanks.
