Pretty much every hotel can set you up with these activities without much notice. The better such activities are gonna be a little far away for a day trip, but there are some closer opportunities available.

We did the zip line at a place near Cartago (45 min's) - not bad but the hike up almost killed me  - while available, I had a much better experience doing it (as well as ATV's) in Jaco and Monteverde - but if you want a day trip, it will suffice :)

Before jumping on any ATV´s he might want to check the first article in todays AM Costa rica.
www.amcostarica.com.

Better to know before hand than find out the hard way.

I did the San Jose city tour and was fun and informative. Price was $39 and the HLH made all the arrraingements for me.

I suggest making friends with one of the working girls, you can really get a GFE and a tour guide all in one for very little money. They know how to travel economically and do not mind riding a bus because it is their way of life. I mentioned I was going to travel to the beach and this chica wanted to go with me. She said what beach I said Jaco, she said lets go to Punteranus it is safer. We stayed three days. I gave her a cien and bought her some trinkets. I let her make all purchases to keep from paying gringo prices. It was a fantastic three days. Even ho's need a vacation. It may take a few days to establish a relationship as good as this but it was worth it. These girls will look after their paycheck.

Its a great idea, 'Vette, but I don't want to give the impression this is common - most of the girls know little about the city, et al and make far better - uh, you know  vs tour guides.

Also, its generally a really bad idea (although your trip seemed to work out well :) ) to go anywhere with a girl - remember - we are talking really clueless newbi's here  :P  - without knowing her - besides, the OP is looking for a zip line or ATV tour, not a trip to the beach
