trying to follow this .....the DR as a rule has the worst exchange you can find (is the information you are giving is on 2 different days where the exchange moved ) that bank gives the best and DR is the worst just like the sportmens .....I think you better double check the information before posting |

Sounds like he confused the compra (buy) and venta (sell) rates. The banks are averaging about 498 buy and 510 sell so seeing how the HDR always offers some of the worst exchange rates in the gulch it would not be surprising that they would sell at 530. Hard to understand how he says BAC-San Jose, the bank at the airport, bought his dollars for 490. Their posted rate the past 4 or 5 days has been between 496 and 499. |

Sounds like he's saying the HDR was buying and selling colones, not dollars. Sneaky, sneaky, HDR ![]() But as I posted above, I did sell $100 at HDR one day for 500 colones per, when ten seconds prior xe.com quoted 501.20 SR Most of us who have to change dollars often down here or do biz in both use 500-1 right now. It is much easier and an even number, so if you get 500 to 1 you are doing fine......Now when the average rate goes to abouve 510 to 1 then you need to look for that extra. I know it is only about $2, but when you exchange it all the time the $2 every hundo adds up........ |

Gweiss wrote: In addition I mention that Dollars can be spent almost anywhere, but colones are appreciated by all. There is a cost to buying colones, but the loss in exchange on every transaction is higher, likely. The girls all like dollars, and for large purchases dollars fine. Buying a coffee at the Del Rel for 600c or an orange juice for 1,100c is obviously best a colones purchase. I am blowing through my colones, so my $500 purchase of about 250,000c will be good for the ten days. My ticas costs are way far above this because of frequency during the day 24/7. I don't like the ATM charges so have brought a fair amount of $. Don't use the term interchangably w/ prostitute - I'm sure not all your conquests were natives of Costa Rica (likely nicas, maybe dominicanas, et al), which is what "tica" means |

Best to use the ATM machines, most give you the fair exchange rate. Scotia Bank also gives you your new balance left with your U.S. or Canada bank account. Take Dollars to the super market and buy a coke. Give the cashier $20 and she will give you back around 10,000 in colones, a far rate. You can also go to any bank and exchange. Most have the buy/sale rate posted when you walk in. Also, Teledolar (moneygram) location's gives you a fair exchange. |

The exchange rate and out of network fees if any are determined by the bank that issued the card. The only difference in charges you pay is what the bank who owns the ATM you use "take" as a fee for using their machine. BCR and BN no fee, BAC-San Jose $3.00, Scotia $1.50, etc. |

Gweiss wrote: I m up for being corrected. I do put the word tica in place of chica, by mistake, often. I do not see the negative in the use though. I could use nica in the same way. I am talking about ladies I meet, and they are all pretty, nice and willing. I mean no negative to any lady or race or culture. Maybe it is seen as a slap against the local ladies by the resident ex-patriates? So sorry if I am offending, but the tica will slip. I like ticas, nicas, colombians, and whom ever else can wrap her lips about my pickle. That's why you have much to learn, grasshopper ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() To Costa Ricans, the term used interchangably with prostitute is highly offensive, and you can understand why - it simply means female Costa Rican. In fact, there have been mentions on the board of guys who, in Tico bars, have gotten into fights over the use of the term, and true or not, shows you how offensive the use is to many people. You posted: "Maybe it is seen as a slap against the local ladies by the resident ex-patriots?" Doubtful they use the term, b/c they know better ![]() I blame the board somewhat, calling itself "Costa Rica Ticas" - Simply meaning CR girls, but its understandable some would think it means prostitutes - but not the case. And you are certainly not the only - nor will you be the last - to use the term improperly. You could use the term "Nica" but that would be ignorant too - it simply means someone - yup, male or female - from Nicaragua. You might ask why I care, and why its a peeve - I think everyone - especially Americans - who travel to CR is looked at, good or bad, much the same as we might view tourists (I live in Miami so we get a ton of Latin tourists) visiting America. Why go out of your way to offend someone - its really preventable stupidity. Be aware and don't use the term. (You could question why I care - even though I've explained why - but you really can't quarrel with what I've posted). I responded with a fairly detailed explanation, b/c I think from reading your posts you are a good guy (even if you have some strange and weird ideas about blow jobs under the table in public places ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I point it out to CRT brothers for two reasons: 1) I was one who witnessed an American tourist get into an altercation with several locals because he kept asking them where he could find "ticas". When they realized he was using "ticas" to mean "putas", harsh words, pushing and shoving ensued. Luckily for him (them? the tourist was a very large person ![]() 2) What Scuba1 said above. +1 Now, if after being told what "tica" means someone still wants to exercise their Darwinian right to be an assmeg and go out of their way to offend people, be my guest. At least they'll be doing it willingly, instead out of ignorance. TEHO. mh |

FWIW when I got there (Nov 23) the DOWNSTAIRS (ripoff) place at the airport said 432xxxxxxxx. ![]() ![]() ![]() HDR was 530/490 and Sportsmens was 490. When I left on Dec 1, UPSTAIRS at the airport was 510/490. xe.com is a single number and therefore just a ballpark. It's never what you're going to see on a buy/sell basis where the exchange place is going to be making something on both ends. |

When I was down there last week I heard that the Colonial Casino next door to the HDR gives a good bank rate. |
