I found out from my bank here in the US that they will exchange dollars for colones at a very good rate for little / maybe even no fee. I recommend carrying some of both when in CR. I generally pay for stuff in colones, except for chicas.

Anyway, I think the home bank option gives the most economical (and easy) option to get colones.

Banks NEVER do anything without a fee :)

However, I am Canadian and our dollar is once again pretty much on par with the USD. I bought $1600 US the other day for $1620 Canadian, and the $20 was pretty much bank fee. I love when our dollar gets strong... made a killing on some Ebay purchases lately as well!

The Canadian dollar was disrespected by the world and especially the US for way too long. It's about time it was at par with the USD. After all, you guys didn't do that which nearly torpedoed the world's economy--a picture of rectitude by comparison. And no phony mortgage interest deduction to artificially inflate home prices either, yet you have an equal or greater % of homeownership.

Easy/Convenient- to a degree (I mean, is it that hard to exchange money in CR? :? )
Economical- I seriously doubt that your US bank will give you anywhere near the current rate. I'm guessing 10% commission/fee, if not more. I would think that you could get a better rate at most CR hotels than you would at a bank in the US.

For colones, yes. For US dollars, I got a great rate back home. But the currency exchange raped me at the airport in Toronto for colones. I think it was like 473 colones per Canadian dollar and the cnd dollar was on par with the us dollar that day (or damn close)

Hotel La Amistad has been exchanging USD to colones at a rate of 498 here the last couple of days.

The rip off Global Currency exchange is giving under 450.

Go upstairs to the bank. It's 500 even today.

Look for Banco BAC San José S.A.

If anyone is worried about a 14 colone difference in exchange rates, you got more to worry about than exchange rates... Just sayin'...

soon enough we will be exchanging dollars for tiny napkins.....they are printing 100 dollar bills as fast as they can back at the treasury.....the printer machines are wearing out and the employees are working insane overtime hours...no shit!..I wouldn't be thankful my currency was par with the dollar!....

the plan to get out of this debt hole is to inflate out way out and pay back the debt with worthless dollars....

It's has to do more with not feeling like you got gringo-fucked than it is about losing a few pennies per dollar.

I know the mindset behind it, but the reality is you waste time, energy and peace of mind over a few cents... If you're a cheap fokker, more power to you... Me, I have better things to NOT worry about...
