Hey Guys,

Can't wait for my maiden trip this coming weekend, it's finally here!

Just wanted to ask about the general dress code for places like the SL bar or the Del Rey....I know Ticos in general do not wear flip flops and shorts except to the beach. Now I am not saying I would wear that stuff in, but how do you generally dress around the ladies? I will stick out regardless as I am a 6'2" white guy but I dont want people to see me and think that Im a clueless sucker. Any advice you have for me is appreciated.

Wear what you want. Theres no dress code. You wont get denied entry for wearing sandles. And dont worry about sticking out, we all do, none of us are gonna pass for tico. However, if you plan on going to some of the clubs down at the Pueblo, then jeans are required. But everywhere else, shorts and flip flops are good to go.

I normally wear jeans when I go out of the SL and will wear shorts or whatever I want while in the SL. I dont think the girls really care what you are wearing..... :P

I wore long shorts and flip flops everywhere I went No problems except I will not wear flip flops again because you are always walking up and down little hills and flip flops didnt really cut it. Tevas or other good sandals would be better or some light weight sneakers would be alot better. Plus your feet will get pretty dirty walking the streets in sjo in flip flops or sandals.
By the way all the locals wear some sort of real shoes or hooker boots

It's your vacation, wear whatever you are comfortable in. You won't blend in no matter what you wear, so you might as well be comfortable.

No dress code. Wear anything that makes you feel confortable. You may be able to score more with the girls if you look decent. :)

Depends. Do you want to stand out (not necessarily in a good way) or blend in?

In the Gulch...wear what you want to be comfortable...it's very little about what you wear to the chica's and more about how much of what's in your wallet your willing to share with them.

FYI...I did go to an Italian Restaurant one night and they didn't allow a person in my party in because he had on a tank top ... they didn't allow sleeveless attire....this however is the exception more then the rule

As far as looking like a sucker...well its not as much as looking like a sucker either, but just not acting like one ... there are women who will test you whether you look or act like a sucker or not (simply because they have never seen you or because it just doesn't cost them anything to just try) so don't be insulted that's just what they do... just don't respond like a sucker.

Enjoy your trip

I always bring a couple pair slacks, and dress shoes wherever I go, and a nice button down dress shirt. I have noticed you are treated differently from the airport all the way to the honey hole.

Wow, after 4 years on this board, I can't believe I have not seen this advice. It never crossed my mind to dress like a CEO (I know slacks and a dress shirt is not Donald Trump), but it sure couldn't hurt with the ticket taker/customs/bar attendent/flight attendent/customes again/cab driver (actually that might be a bad thing).

Very nice advice.
