I will be visiting CR in the next couple of weeks for the first time and I will most likely be staying at the Sleep Inn close to the Del Rey. My question: Is it safe to walk between these two hotels at night? I know that the neighborhood is not the best but any info you can offer would be appreciated. |

I think that you could walk that anytime... it would take less time than hailing a cab Not sure ..but would think there is an entrance to the hotel from the casino that is two doors down from Del Rey Same as walking to KL in my book Also the Sleep Inn has a little fee of 25 bucks for your chica of the moment.... |

Neighborhood may not be the best but it is far from the worst. Exiting the HDR from the casino side it is a 30 second walk to the Sleep Inn parking lot. From the BM side it is almost as short awalk to the Colonial Casino. Walk throught the casino exit in the back to the parking lot and the Sleep Inn is across the lot. Both parking lots have guards on duty. No problem walking at night. |

...But the question is not foolish, given all the talk over the years of how unsafe it is to walk downtown. BTW, given the steep Chica fee at the Sleep Inn, you might consider taking her (or especially if it's multiples at a time) to a "love motel". Just a thought... |

I know you're a new member, and welcome to the board, but as a vet I had to chuckle. DR to the Sleep Inn is like going from your living room to the backyard. You ll be fine. |

Still wouldn't hurt to keep whatever money you're carrying in your front pants pocket or better yet a zippered or buttoned pocket so as to deter pickpockets. Also don't let the street riffraff start touching you or getting too close. Walk with determination and awareness of who is around you and what is going on and don't be afraid to firmly tell any persistent ones that might follow you to Fuck-off. |

Ajaco, You should seriously consider trying one of the hotels frequented by CRT members such as the Sportsmen's, Dunn, La Amistad, Castillo, et. al. They are about a $1-2 cab ride to the Del Rey, have no chica fees and you will meet a lot of great people. |

I stayed there in April. The easiest is to go from the Blue Marlin side exit (towards Monkey Bar) and take a left, go 100 feet, and enter the Colonial Casino. Go through the hwole casino and exit out the back door, through the parking lot (gated/secure), and into the hotel entrance. The other way is out the HDR cafe side door, and go right about 150 feet to the white parking lot gate. The only problem that I found is that the gate is closed at night and twice the guard was away from the booth (either patrolling the lot or maybe taking a piss ![]() |

I pulled my pepper spray directly in front of the "large white gate" between the Del Rey and Chubbs when two trannies approached me. I have no doubt they were "up to no good". In my humble opinion downtown San Jose is "very dangerous" anytime but especially after dark. I was told the Ladrones are now using cell phones to text information on potential gringos to rob. Example....see a drunk or old or tourist gringo flashing money in the DR or KL...watch him or them leave.....text their buddies.....bang...they got you! |

I know that the best solution is to avoid putting yourself in a dangerous situation, and this goes double for the brothers who are older and/or loaded w/$ or booze. I'm average size for an American, good shape, younger than the average CRTer, and don't drink a lot. If a couple of low-life's tried to mug me outside the Del Rey, less than a block from my hotel, that would just piss me off. I know it's the wrong answer and not the prudent thing to do, but I couldn't accept giving up any valuables in that situation. That said, it's best to always be aware of your surroundings and to always have an idea where trouble could come from. If you look out the door and have even the vaguest feeling that you are being targeted, use another exit or just walk with some of the other guys heading in your direction. Predators prefer prey that is separated from the herd. The same inner voice that tells you whether a chica is interested in you or not for a better than average experience will let you know about safety too. If you haven't developed that through experience, then stay with the herd. |
