Gentlemen, I am planning to visit CR and cannot decide between San Jose (where I have already been) and Jaco Beach. What is the difference between the two scenes? Is there substantially less entertainment in Jaco Beach. dacii.

dacii,

You've already been to SJO, so just take a ride over to Jaco for a couple nights. What do you got to lose? Jaco is a completely different scene. Once you've been there and seen it, you can judge for yourself. SJO is (for the most part) the belly of the beast / 24-7 action. Jaco is a beach town, with P4P primarily at night.

Two totally different scenes. Give Jaco a try. You might like it or not, but you'll have to see it and then decide for yourself. My dos colones...

The ride to Jaco and back will give you a pretty good picture of CR. Stopping at the top of the mountian on a clear day is a sight you will remember.

Thank you very much! What's the best way to get to Jaco - bus or taxi? How far is it?

By best, do you mean cheapest? fastest? or a combination of both?

The cheapest way is the public bus, it costs about $3. It takes about 3.5 hours.

The fastest way is by taxi, but it will cost you at least $100 each way. (You may be able to negotiate a taxi down to under $100) It can be done in under 2 hours.

The best way in my opinion is Interbus. It costs $29 per person each way. If you are by yourself or with 1 buddy, this is a good option. If your group is 3 or more people, take a taxi. The ride is 2:30-2:45 hrs.

Daci,

I think the answer depends on exactly "how well" you visited San Jose on your prior trip. Were you knowledgable about the scene and know what you were doing and free to party ? Stayed in a monger friendly hotel ??
Or were you here once with no real clue as to what you were doing ???

If this were the case than I would recommend you stay in San Jose !

Alright, it sounds like Jaco is defintley a place to visit for a day or two. Orange thank you for telling me about Interbus. Are there perhaps closer beaches?

I was in Jan Jose for 8 hrs during the day. I am a bit familar and got a very, very good taste. I am curious ... sounds like Del Ray is a place to hang out but not stay ... right? If so, why not a place to stay? Does Hotel Little Havan offer mongering amenties beyond Amistad or is it simply more fancy?

Can't wait to get there!

Brother Orange gave excellent advice about using InterBus but if you want to save a couple of bucks on their ride, look at www.shuttlebus.co.cr They are a booking agent for InterBus, and was formerly known as SearchCostaRica.com. Same ride, less price. You might consider them for the airport transfer as well.
Playa Jaco is the closest beach town to SJO, which is both a plus and a minus.
Please consider joining us as a CRT VIP. It's not a cost, it's an investment. Truly
