Man! I always say it's a bad idea to only learn a few phrases of a new language. It can make you look like a buffoon when they are asking you a question

I can understand Brother P-B's point but if you make it understood that you are new to the language and are working on it and you had to start somewhere, wouldn't that take some out of the sting out of the buffoonery? "Today I don't have much Pushtu but you women here are so beautiful, I will be learning more"? Something like that? Honest question--I'm not tugging your tail.

Jazzbo- I would think generally speaking that if you are attempting to learn its never a bad thing.

That said (most) of the time when mongers want "phrases" they want dirty phrases or phrases with sexual connotations. In this case I think its a bad idea to start firing sexual questions in spanish when that's all you know. Why? Well what do you think it says about the monger (to the chica) if that's the only spanish you took the time to learn? Exactly, business...

One of my strongest contentions to learn is so that guys can be themselves. The more you can separate yourself from being business, the better...

Exactly ..also I think perhaps the only English the women you meet may know is a few "phrases" she learned for purposes of business-like interview and speeding up the process of getting your money...meaning very little. If you know enough of the language to just converse and start talking about things it takes her out of that mode. More like a hook-up.. (I know, I like to pretend)..
