Post subject:  Review: Pops' Wing-Man Service

What do you do if this is your first visit to San Jose for mongering? Okay, you've got the maps, you've read everything you can possibly absorb from CRT, but you are still unsure?

May I suggest Pops' Wing-Man Service? Pops was my constant companion for much of my trip, and although I am no longer a newbie, I found his service to be of incredible value. :D

Here are some advantages/features to consider:

* Pops is a C.R. resident. His ground-level knowledge base is immense.

* Pops knows many girls and can make solid recommendations based upon your style and needs.

* A former Atlanta GA police officer, Pops is aware, street-smart and can handle himself in what can be tough urban situations.

* Pops speaks Spanish and can interpret for you with girls, shopkeepers etc.

* Pops knows a variety of restaurants, bars, historical and architectural sites of interest.

* He's a great guy, very patient and fun-loving.

* His service is inexpensive. Yes, you can easily find a wing-man who will hang with you for free, but the problem here often is a clash of objectives and desires. Pops will help you do what *you* want to do most, and because he's a paid guide, your wishes are his commands.

You can contact Pops via PM here at CRT.

I cannot recommend Pops and his services highly enough. He was my right hand in C.R., and I know that you wil benefit from using his services. :!: :D

Never met Pops, by all account he seems a decent fellow. But if I'm gonna pay someone to hang out with me, its gonna be a 19 yr old tica with great tits, not a retired cop. No offense.

I met Pops during my newbie trip. I heartily endorse El Ciego's recommendation to anyone who feels they could benefit from Pop's services.

Everyone does with their money what they please. No offense.

Gotta also endorse Pop's, great guy and knows his stuff. He will definitely make you first time trip go much smoother and with less worries.

If not for Pops I know my first trip would have been more complicated than it had to be, now I can pretty much solo CR. :D

I was reading a few other posts about Pop's guide service--a few of the guys where dissing Pops because there are plenty of other experienced guys who could do a similiar service for free-but they might not tailor the guide service to what you are interested in. As a person who is a noobie and has no experience in SJ--it sounded to me as if Pop's guide service would be perfect and ideal for me, so I favorited his website --some of you might want to also, so you can contact him a few weeks before you head out to schedule his time. 4-6 hours of guiding me around for $30-$35 bucks is worth its weight in poontang if you ask me.

Thanks in advance Pop's you will have my business

I've been to CR many times and always sin wingman, but bet that Pops could show me that I've barely scratched the surface.....There is no substitute for local knowledge, no matter where you go.

I visited CR for the first time back in February. I had arranged for Pops to be my guide since his fee is so reasonable.

Pops met me at my hotel first day. He is a very easy going guy and I enjoyed hanging out with him from the start. I was a little nervous and reluctant since I had never been on a trip to Central America and never on a trip for mongering. In the first afternoon/evening we went everywhere: to 4 MP's, SL, Del Ray, etc... I could not find the right chica to pop my CR cherry. Finally we found an outstanding Tica at the Del Ray for me. Pops did the negotiating, took us out and hailed a cab for us. What service!

The next day he came back and resumed the tour. We walked all through town taking in the local sights and had lunch. I saw him all through the week as he normally hangs out at the SL

Pops wears a small belt pack which he told me contains his personal belongings and a large knife! During our walking tour, two men walked up unexpectedly right behind us and startled us. Pops turned and assumed a defensive position with his hand in the belt pack. He looked ready to pounce. It turned out to be a false alarm but the dude looked ready to react!

Also, I had dental surgery while I was there and was laid up in my hotel room for two days. Pops came by to check in on me and to make sure I was all right. I tell you, being in a foreign country, not knowing anyone, that made quite an impression on me.

I heartily recommend Pops. Just send him a private message here on the forum to: Pops

I decided yo meet with popson my first visit. He is anice fellow but the info he offers barely scratches the surface. If you have the crt vip map and read the posts on this site, he is fairly redundant.

Considering that many CRTers do not spend a lot of time walking around urban environments, let alone crappy third world cities, it seems that Pops provides a valuable service.

I've never used him or even met him but if a green country boy or a suburban cowboy doesn't have any relevant or recent experience with a place like San Jose, I'd steer him to Pops.

For you doubters...

Maybe you are experienced in third world whoremongering. Maybe you're streetwise. Maybe you have a map in hand and all the CRT info one could possibly digest. However, if you can't say "yes" to even one of the three points above, you will benefit from Pops' service.

Look, this is the Newbies section; my review of Pops' service is intended for guys with little or no experience in C.R.

"Din't scratch the surface?" If you have knowledge of where you would like to go, Pops will accompany you. If you have no idea, Pops can make great suggestions.

His prices are so low (less than an MP hour in most places) that you'd be stupid *not* to hire him as part of your first or second trip.

This last trip was my sixth in five years. I have extensive knowledge of C.R. (not just SJ), speak Spanish fluently and am no newbie (178 days in country, total). I still found Pops to be a useful guide...but more importantly, I've made a good friend.

Visit his website, drop him a PM or just look for a 60 year-old bald guy in reasonably good shape the next time you visit the SL.

Newbies take note: My biggest concern for new guys is keeping them safer in what can be a dodgy environment. Pops can help you stay safer and get more out of your first couple nights in country. Trust...this guy is an excellent wing and a great human being! :D

Agree with the above statements. I booked a Pops tour for my brother on his newbie trip. I did not wanted to be holding my brother hand around and to give him a broader picture of SJ. He was ready to go after the tour and even share some of the tips with me.. Worth every penny spend.

I f you travel a foreign country with only a map, then your only companion is Ego and not local knowledge.

Thanks a lot for this recommendation El Ciego. I'm a big dude, but most of my urban late-night experience is limited to when I'm up in Baltimore for business once or twice a year. I only know a little Spanish and am making my first trip for the first 8 days of November, and I am definitely going to try to get in touch with him one of the first days I'm there. It looks like his rate is a steal, and the CRT VIP membership comes in handy once again!

I sent him an email and PM days ago, hoping to use him on my trip in a few weeks, and have had no reply.
