I connect in IAH my bags should countinue on to sjo without anything further from me.just make sure the baggage claim sticker reflects that.

once at IAH I continue on to terminal E for international flights.

once at sjo I go thru immigration and turn in the thing I filled out on plane.
then on to baggage claim and customs.then head upstairs to pay exit tax and exchange money.then take cab to sl.

I'm not sure what to do when departing sjo.I assume I check my bags at ticket counter then head to customs then on to gate?

upon returning to IAH not real sure what to do either but I have a 2hour layover

sorry for the long post,just trying to make sure I have my act together.

as I get closer to departure time I'm sure I will ask more newb questions.

what about exchanging money back into U.S. currency,can you do this at sjo? will they be open at say 0430?

Yes, when you leave you will check your bags at the ticket counter. Then to through security and on to your gate. In IAH, you will have to pick up your bags and clear customs. Once through customs, you will need to drop off your bags in the "Connecting Flights" area. Someone there will take your bag and throw it on to a conveyor and HOPEFULLY it will make it on to your plane landing in your destination city. 2 hours might seem like a long layover. Sometimes it is and sometimes it is not. Depends on how smoothly everything runs at immigration, how long you wait for your bags, is your plane landing on time, etc... So, don't get the idea 2 hours is an eternity. Sometimes it's not. I find quick flights to Panama City but I don't take them because the layover is only 45 minutes in Atlanta. If your plane lands late, you are probably screwed. So, I opt for the flight that has about a 2 hour layover.

As for changing money back. I never had that problem. I never changed enough at one time for it to be a problem. Sometimes I might have brought back $50 or $100 in colones. No big deal. Use them next time.

Si, but they give you the form back and take the customs form downstairs after you get your bags.

Follow the herd to immigration, get your bags, give them the customs form, re-check them if connecting flights, go through security then to your next gate.

No you KEEP those colones so you have an excuse to return :wink: Or just use them to pay your hotel bill upon checkout.

Morbidchicken: Please PM me: I have burned up well over 500,000 frequent flyer miles on international travel. About 75,000 to Cr.

It is no big deal. Most airlines are more than willing to help you with any issue you may have.

As far as the flight to Cr, no worries: Check your bags and they will be there when you arrive, most of the time.
On the way back: After leaving San Jose, You will have to claim your bags at your connecting airport, after going through immigration, and then drop them off at the "connecting flight" area. This is usually located just outside of the customs area.
IF you buy a lot of souvenirs and it totals more than $400.00 and you declare it on the customs form, be ready to pay the taxes.
Other than that you should breeze through.

The worst part is negotiating through the terminals to make your flights.

Actually, when leaving SJO, enter the terminal, turn to the right & get your departure tax paid first. You won't be able to check in without the receipt.

And, after the Departure Tax Station, there is a currency exchange where you can exchange your colones back to dollars. But, I just keep them for my return trip. Try to keep 15K so you can stare at when in the US, thinking these two little pieces of paper for 1 hr at a MP with a little latina. It puts a little grin on your face when remembering your trip.
