I've been seeing the term "tica" used a lot around here lately, usually to describe a prostitute.
That is not correct!
Learn this or risk losing local friends in C.R. "Tica" is slang for any woman of Costa Rican birth. We call the hookers "chicas" ("gals" in English), because puta while accurate is harsh and at best, impolite.
"Chicas" may come from any of a dozen countries; Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Cuba, Nicaragua, the DominicanRepublic.... I've even met a chica in C.R. from Venezuela and another from Brazil.
So guys, if you're trying to say prostitute...say chica. Even if the chica is a tica.
