I was reading a trip report where they say they flew from detroit to sjo for 277.well I look on AA.com and sure enough 277 dtw to sjo round trip with stops in dallas. I searched dallas to sjo and the fare is more than double. I just dont get it! and if I cant get a good deal on airfare I definatly wont get it. I thought I would look into flying into dtw by way of southwest airlines but the cost of round trip plus the time wasted just doesnt cut it. still have till mid september to find a deal. thanks for letting me vent |

Well, I'm sure the fact that there is massive unemployment in the Detroit area (and Windsor on my side of the border) is a factor. They've got to cut the fares in that area just to get anyone to fly. I was thinking of taking advantage of that $277 fare myself (Delta/Northwest has it as well), but DTW is about a 3 hour drive from where I live. Sucks to have to drive it late at night. |

I just dont get it! and if I cant get a good deal on airfare I definatly wont get it. I take it from your post that you likely live in the DFW area and would be flying direct to SJO. I live full time in CR but am from the Dallas area myself. So checking in on ticket prices is a common practice for me. I can offer you a couple pieces of advice. #1. The ticket price from DFW to SJO will always be higher than many of the routes from other cities that connect through other cities. The reason for this is the lack of passenger traffic on the first leg of the flight. The flights from DFW, ATl, MIA, Houston, Etc. to SJO have many more passengers on them than the first leg of the other passenger's trip. The airline will take the hit just to get people on the first leg of the trip. #2. You can benefit from the same type of "discount" by flying through Houston. Try Continental leaving our of either DFW or LUV (I find it cheaper and easier to go through Love Field myself, plus it is closer to home and I actually find it cheaper to rent a car around this airport when I return to visit family). The Houston airport is very organized as far as immigration and customs so re-checking your luggage on the way back will be very easy. There are also countless flights back and forth between Houston and DFW/LUV so if you were delayed for any reason it would not be a long wait until the next flight. #3. Try multiple destination flight schedules. Since I live here full time in Guanacaste, I will most of the time fly back to the US through the Liberia (LIR) airport and then return to SJO. If you compare ticket prices for the same dates making a round trip to the same airport I find that I will save up to about 25% by doing the multiple destination method. My last trip to the US it was almost $800 round trip on A'A LIR to DFW direct, but changing that to LIR to DFW direct, and then DFW to SJO direct for the return my tcket cost was $430. After a two week trip to visit family in the US I returned to 5 nights at the SL and the difference in my airfare almost paid for my stay at SL. Feel free to PM me is you you have any questions about airfare in and out of DFW area. |
