I am traveling to CR solo for couple days prior to hooking up with larger group of gringos. Being a former marine, I would like to bring a 3-4" knife for defense in case of issue. Does anyone know if carrying a pocket knife is legal in CR and what problems having that might pose?

Blue,
Contact Pops. He lives down there and is a former cop from Atlanta. I know he knows the rules concerning weapons. Very cool guy to hang out with, too. He has a guide service and you can hire him for a small amount of cash and can take you to where all the action is. Send him a private message to: pops or check out his website http://www.popsguideservice.net

Leave the weapon at home mi Amigo. I am a former Military man . If you don't have a weapon and a situation arises you will not use it; you will find other ways to defend your self. Weather you are right or wrong you are an American you will find your self in Jail and never see the light of day. The bad asses in Costa Rica know who to pray on. you are a former Marine they will take one look at you and will not Phuck with you.. So for the love of God, country and pu*sy.. Please don not carry any weapons with you to Costa Rica..

Thanks

True, However jail time is only if you used the knife correct, such as involved in conflict? I always like the phrase, id rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 :-) Guess my question is geared towards, will i land in jail just for having it? Being recon marine, i have plenty of tactics i can use, however gun and knife attacks i can win with a knife.

Don't go looking for trouble and trouble won't find you! If you find yourself in a situation in CR where you need a knife, you are in the wrong phooking hood man. If someone targets you, you will need more than a knife. I have roamed in a few spots where maybe I should have and no one has even hinted at starting a problem with me (except ex-girlfriends). The only weapon you need is the one in your pants mae - pura vida.

If you walk around like a bad ass looking for trouble, it will find you. Walk confident, show respect to all around, and you will be 100% fine. Below is a list of needs for CR that will keep you safe and happy.

100 dollar bills, ben franklins, etc.
Condoms
small boxes of chocolates (gifts for chicas)
DiaCort - for whatever ails your tummy (need to buy this at a local pharmacy).
more condoms
more 100 dollar bills
viagra - because unless you are a Don't ask don't tell marine, you will Phuck yourself dry after about 4 days in Candyland
A good map of the country.
And last and most important - 100 dollar bills and condoms

Met Pops for the first time at the best SuperBowl party in Costa Rica this year - and he is a heck of a good guy and knows the ropes. He should be your first stop!! Take the tour and hook up with an experienced wingman or two and you will have a blast!

Peace, love, and happiness for all,

Don Rico

Where do you think you're going Rambo... Marja?

Carrying a concealed knife or gun in Costa Rica is an excellent way to land in jail. You get stopped by la policia for any reason, they pat you down and find it, you might land in jail for 90 days while they figure out what to charge you with or if they should let the crazed Gringo with the machete go.

People do carry concealed weapons, but be aware you're giving the police a reason to throw you in jail or shake you down.

Don't carry gobs of cash, leave the gold chains and Rolex at home, stay in well know monger haunts, take red taxis with the yellow triangle everywhere at night, always walk with a wingman, don't be a target by walking around as if you're lost or acting like an obnoxious gringo. After 9 trips I've YET to have a problem in San Jose following these simple rules, and I'm a short old guy.

And yes, do contact Pops. Aside from the CRT VIP fee it'll be the best money you'll ever spend.

Being a fomer Marine myself (congrats by the way for being the toughest of the tough), these Brothers are giving you solid scoop, not just scuttlebutt. You won't find a better paid companion than Brother Pops--his fee is an investment, not an expense. If you absolutely need something to befog an enemy while you make your getaway, pepper spray is availible in SJO. I'd be astonished if you were in a situation to need it--there's too many safer fun places. After you've made some trips here and want to take a trip on the wilder side...maybe then. But leave the edged weapons etc. at home--more harm than good. Ask the Marine guards at the Embassy...

Ok, almost unanimously , you are being advised to travel about here without a knife. To reiterate, you don't want to have a knife so you wont make decisions based on the fact that you've got a knife in your pocket. On the contrary. You may think, "hey, it's only two blocks and since I DONT have a knife in my pocket I'll go ahead and pay One Dollar for a taxi ".

If you face a situation here and defend yourself successfully with a knife, you will go to jail. Witnesses will appear out of the woodwork for the other guy.

If you avoid a situation here, you will be busy looking for the girl from the night before last.

You don't need a knife to have a good time in the gulch. You will be much better off and safer to hook-up with a wingman or two if you are going out at night.

If you think that you have found yourself in a situation where you need a weapon then you have phucked up. Don't do that.

The gulch is about fun and phucking chicas. You don't need to pack a knife for that.

Well some good advice here and the best is to try and avoid bad situations but to play devil's advocate for a moment- what's the big deal if an ex-marine want to carry a pocket knife (3-4" blade) he might want to peel a mango or something. Besides there are members that have (and probably still do) carried much bigger blades, tasers and telescopic batons around the gulch.

I agree with Brother PacoLoco. I've carried a pocket knife daily for 50 years (almost feel naked without it) and if I checked luggage, still would in CR. But I can't bring it down and I can't carry it back if I got one here so watcha gonna do? Do without for a week, is what. I think what's really being said is that a weapon can yield a false sense of security, so without that, you develop and use a real sense of security. Macho has it's place but in a different cultural/ legal environment...? This dead horse has been beat enough.

Feeling naked in CR is not a bad thing Jbro :D but keep it to yourself and the chicas por favor. Or you could take a walk to the shop on calle 2 and load up with some pepper spray, knife for each pocket, a taser or two, a few ninja throwing stars and a dozen vibrators for party favors. Not that I condone it since the bad guys will have either a pistola in your face or a machete, the only thing I got there was the vibrators- price is negotiable and be sure they include batteries!
