Man if I were that afraid of Costa Rica after as many trips as you have made, I would find somewhere else to travel too. That bus ride during the day is as safe as any I know of in the USA. actually safer than a lot. As PR said, if you have more than carry on, It is a hassle that I would not attempt. BUT it just is not that dangerous :!:

I usually walk from there, but if I feel tired, I'll take a cab to the gulch for about another 400 colones. It's really no big deal.

Coming in 1:00 PM April 7, during the day shouldn't the cheap Tico bus be ok? How much is it? Where does your luggage go on the bus? Where do they drop you off in San Jose? Thanks Foos April 7-21 2009

sounds to me like you've answered your own question(s)... Where do I put my luggage? I would not want to arrive in CR at the airport with all my luggage then have to deal with all the security issues of having to put it all on a bus. (IMHO) Do a search. I took the bus once in December to and from airport to resolve a ticketing issue that arose before my flight home the following day. I had no luggage, so I wasn't paying $40 for taxis. The fare is Â¢540. The luggage goes under the bus. I would STRONGLY advise against taking the bus unless you only have a carry on which you can bring onboard with you. The drop off in San Jose is on Avenida 2, just as you turn onto it from Pasoo Colon. Note: There is a guy in a white shirt at the airport bus stop who will direct you to which bus is going to San Jose. If you get on the wrong bus, you'll be going in the other direction.

Foos... I always take the bus when I can. You can take on carry-on luggage, a computer bag, and your duty-free booze. It is usually more or less empty when it arrives at the airport so you can find a good seat and have room to move around and settle in. I have never had reason to feel threatened or saw suspicious characters...and beleive me my radar is always on. The bus will make local stops all along the highway and Paseo Colon and can take a while, especially if traffic is lousy...but remember if thats the case a taxi or a private pick up won't help much. You will need to get a taxi when you alight the bus at the terminal at Avenida 2, but this should never be a problem. You will pay for your first session at RELAX wit the savings! Phoenix Rising

If you take the bus, you'll need to tote your luggage a bit of a distance. It is doable, however. This service uses InterBus as the carrier, but the booking service link I have supplied you is located in the USA and you can make payment via PayPal. The service does NOT have it's own vans...it uses the InterBus service. You can book directly with InterBus but that can be a bit of headache as they're slow on email response and typically require you to either email them your credit card numbers or fax them to them. I took the bus once from the airport to downtown. Was attacked by some thugs. Took the knife away and slit his throat... stabbed his amigo in the groin and carved a new a$$hole in his other buddy. The bus driver was in on the whole scenario and I tossed his punk Tico a$$ out the door at 50 mph. Drove the bus into town myself with 27 other passengers. The cops were waiting. Spent 17 days in jail before they let me out to recognize me as a national hero at the President's house. It was all over the TV news. I'm a taxi man all the way! Hundreds of bucks to fly... more for pu$$y, food and hotel. Parting with a few greenbacks for a "safer" way into town... PRICELESS. Berk....

Circus tried hitchhiking one time and ended up walking all the way. seriously, only if you have carry on luggage. i tried it once on a low rent trip, got off near the hotel nuevo johnson and rented one of their 10 bucks a night rooms.

for me it's all about time phuking... I have a girl and taxi meet me at the airport, and get my first leche on the way into SJ... Guess if I didn't usually do this arrangement, and I had time, the bus might be a good option... The other reason I take my taxi is that he waits for me outside relax or NF while I get my first non-taxi nut, before I even check into the hotel, and while I do that he goes and buys me a case of Red Bull... it works for me...

Most of us bring the majority of our mongering fund to CR in the form of cash. So, it is worth a few bucks more to take a safe cab from the airport directly to your hotel. This reduces your risk factor from the time you arrive until your cash is safely sequestered in your hotel room safe.

I almost always take the bus from the airport and have never had a problem. The terminal in San Jose is a block south of Paseo Colon and a little less than a mile or so from the DR. I usually walk from there, but if I feel tired, I'll take a cab to the gulch for about another 400 colones. It's really no big deal.
