I get a kick out of any mention of "Newbie"

WTF...you're 40, 50 60 70 years old and need advice on checking into a hotel

need help getting a taxi

need advice on behavior and risks from drinking too much

don't know what to do at 3-4 in the morning

can't do a conversion from dollars to colones

don't know how to say no to a street K*D or a girl of any type

don't know how to use a condom

can't manage your own money in the DR, SL mp's etc

although I think it's pathetic sometimes...the way grown men behave, I guess some advice is necessary sometimes...but pellleeeeeaaassssse...some of this hand holding is embarrassing

how did some of these poor slobs get this far?

While I'll agree that some guys are lazy and want everything handed to them on a silver platter, the majority are questions that are particular to Costa Rica. And I hope this doesn't offend anybody, but some of the older guys aren't great with internet and computers, so it's a little more difficult for them.

We were all newbies at one point and it was a new country and we had questions. I don't mind helping, even answering dumb questions. It kills time at work.

Livinincr,

I think you're taking the classic "I know this stuff, so everyone should" attitude. Lots of people have never been out of the US before. They've never spoken a foregn langauge. They don't know the ins and outs of currency exchange. They've never had to do that.

And, let's face it, Costa Rica isnt the most logical place on earth. Things go on that make no sense whatsoever. For instance, why do you need your passport just to change money? And, it's not easy to know who the reputable people are versus the crooks.

I'm in computers. I deal with a lot of computer people. I also deal with a lot of non-computer people. The computer people take for granted a million things the non-computer people have no idea about. It's not that they're stupid, it's that it's a skill they never learned.

I'd say most of the people could easily do many of the things they ask questions about on this board, *IF* it were in the US.

Wow, if that's not an understatement...

Actually, the passport thing makes sense... In case you're passing counterfeit/stolen bills, or for other legal issues, are you there legally, etc...

The rest... MUY TICO...

I'll second what Orange said, and will add that some of those guys might also be doing P4P for the very first time. They might be coming off a divorce after having been married for a long time, and really no longer know what to do with or how to act around a younger female, let alone a hooker. They hear about CR and CRT and say "hell yeah!", then realize they just junped into something that they know nothing about. Pathetic, yes, but we are here to handhold them. :D

Pathetic, no.

Loathesome original post, yes.

Hey, the majority of Americans have never had a passport. Many have never left the US and that makes them "newbies" at international travel regardless of age.

Livincr - If you were coming to CR for the first time, had limited time and budget and wanted to maximize your vacation, wouldn't you try to find a resource such as this? In my opinion, belittling people who are just trying to increase their knowledge is pretty telling.

What else do you do to try to make yourself feel superior to others? How is that working for you?

All of the items listed are completely different than they are here in the US for most suburban locations. City's have some similar problems I'm sure.

Call for a cab here. It's metered, legit, and the driver will not take you somewhere where you are robbed or worse.

Checking into a hotel at home, no problem, Hotels actually understand what the word reservation means. There's nothing you need to know. None of them at home want you bringing hookers in.

Currency conversion is confusing when you have a few drinks in you, aren't accustomed to it, many are out to get over on you. That simply isn't an issue at home. Not to mention a woman tugging at your crank while doing simple math is a new experience for most. ;)

Get too drunk at home, call a cab or friend. No body is going to roll you in the park. Police will not take you off for a bribe.

Anyway I think you get the point. It's not that people can't shit without help wiping, they just need to know the perils of wiping in a foreign country. ;)

My first post, and soon my second trip. This post just struck me as ridiculous. While I could have gone the first time without the information found here on these forums, it helped me to be safe, and enjoy myself in countless ways. I am the guy in HikerTom's post. edit: WAS that guy, thanks to this place.

It really is more about prepping people who have never left the country and getting yourself in the correct mindset of the local culture. The culture shock upon arrival can not even begin to be explained before experiencing it. You can however prepare for it.

Agree 100%; DrRemulak, great 1st post!!

LivinRC: YOU must have been living here soo long that you do not remember the first time you came here, or are you saying you had all the answers before ariving that first time :?: :?: :?

Many, probably the majority of the guys coming here for the first time have never been out of the good old USA before. They have no concept, no knowledge, no point of reference; only a fear of the unknown and a burning desire to experience what us "old timers" take for granite!!

Yes it is NEW to them-thus they are "newbies"; just as YOU and I were at some point in the past!!

hardly do I believe that we don't need help or advice, as I mentioned in my original post (see above)

But some of the things grown men need advice on should already be in their DNA IMHO

Some thoughtful and warrented responses ...my shortcomming to think that a grown man can wipe his own ass

Hey Livin'

Hmmmmm, ahhhhhhhh.....well that's where everyone suggests you are in error.

All of us can do the stuff we've been doing all of our lives.

It's the new stuff that we ask questions about.

Get it now?

Sure wish I could remove that "Ticas ask me for advice" thing below my screen name. They can ask away.........all they want.....but they're askin' the wrong guy!

Sure hope they don't ask LivinCr    Methinks he's a little short on patience.
