Post subject:  quick passport questions

The last couple of times I've been out of the country I simply made a photocopy of my passport and carried it with me. I'm going to CR for the 2nd time in November and from reading everything I get the feeling I should bring something else...

Should I bring a laminated photocopy?
Is there a certified copy that I can order?
Am I being paranoid and just bring my paper photocopy?

Thanks guys...

I assume you are asking what you need while in Costa Rica as your post is a bit unclear. In CR a photocopy of the info page as well as a copy of the page that has your CR immigration entry stamp is all that is required.

You can get it reduced to credit card size and laminated at a copy shop 25 meters east of the Presidente hotel on Avenida Central. It does not have to be notarized and bringing a laminated copy does not help because you still need the entry stamp copied.

Most all hotels will make a copy for you. The SL made a copy of both sides of my pass port (picture page and the page with the entry stamp) and laminated them back to back. I have only been stopped once by the police and it was a good thing I had it with me. You can now get a drivers licence size pass port. If you all ready have a pass port you can get the new one for like $25. nice and small, fits right inside you wallet.

Aren't they valid only for travel to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean?

I could be wrong but I was told that you can use the small pass port for ID once your in country. But your right you still need to use the larger pass port to get in and out of Costa Rica.

Yes and no on that. You could use the smaller once instead of your photo copy but you would still need to carry the copy of your stamp. I'm really looking into getting one just so I can have it incase I ever have mine lost or stolen.

Same here, I have heard horror stories when it comes to having your pass port stolen.

Next trip Im going to bring my passport plus of photo copy of the main page and then ask them to stamp them both at entry.

Put original copy of passport in safe, carry photo copy, hopefuly stamped with me in a plastic sleve cover.

Two trips to CR both coasts and SJ, two all around Panama, Colo, DR, Guat, no one has ever asked to see my entry stamp, heck I cant even count the times to Mex.; but there are enough posts on here about how you really should have it with you in CR, why risk it.

Some will and some won't. I found the guys will do it but the women won't. No rhyme or reason and I have asked in both English and Spanish.

I agree with you that it would make life easier but it is one of those Muy Tico moments. :?

the new passport id card in good in mexico, canada, bermuda, caribbean, for land or sea travel only, will not help in CR, I use it when I go to TJ, walking across the border.

True. However, it will kill the need to carry a photocopy of your front page and only need to carry the entry stamp after that. The other beauty is that if your passport does get stolen you at least have something of a legal document to hand to the Embassy.
