I would think that for the majority of people, it just makes common sense to stay out of the rain as a cold shower can get you sick really quick and that's definitely not fun while you're on vacation. I was reading ZePequeno's thread and like him I thought there would be mild showers like we see in the East Coast but looking at youtube, these rain showers seem more like deluges, I mean heavy falling rain. My question is how do you guys stay dry, even with an umbrella, you usually get wet especially in the shoe, socks and pants department. Like someone else here posted drinking in a bar with wet socks and shoes just isn't as fun as being dry. What do you CR vets do when you have to go out into the rain? How do you protect yourself from car splashes and just getting your clothing wet in general going from one place to the next? |

Most rain showers while sometimes quite heavy are usually short in duration. Just step into the nearest bar or restaurant order an Imperial and relax. Usually by the time you have finished your beer the rain has stopped. |

For the last five days it has been raining a bitch. I bough a large golf umbrella here for 1500 colones, but I just normally wait someplace or my hotel room until the rain subside. The chicas do the same at the HDR, as soon as you see the rain finish there is a rush of taxis and chicas coming in. They need to keep that hair and makeup in perfect status. It is the difference between a $40 chica to a $60 chica. |

Good replies everyone. Glad to hear there is a solution to this problem, from what I read I thought the rain and came and it never goes away until half a day later. And I have to admit, that pouring rain video on youtube did worry me a little. I'm not a big fan of getting sick. But drinking a cold beer and looking at the rain is certainly something I can do several times over the week. Good time to think about life, the choices and roads you've taken, past lovers, etc. As for Lee, glad to hear you're feeling better and hearing New Orleans survive this storm. I've been a follower of your thread and muchos gracias amigo for some good post. |

I would say go to the New York bar and order Chili. It was good, and warming. I enjoyed a hot bowl of Chili while it rained. While you are there that rare diamond in the rough may stop by. Until my last trip in January I was never in the New York bar much, but my next journey's will find me in there more often. In the short time I was there I saw several probables. Very true, it takes coming into contact with the actual germ / virus to make you sick. Also, could someone tell me when the rainy season ends? Is it still going strong in late October early November? SK |

Giving an exact date is tricky as it changes yearly depending on a number of meteorological variables. Each year the government weather service forecast a start and end date and usually neither pan out. September and October are the rainiest months. November has about half of the rainfall that October has but has about 10 times as much rain as December. The first part of November can be very rainy but as I said it changes from year to year. |

As has been said, getting wet doesn't make you sick. It can lower your immune system in some conditions, making you more susceptible to catching a virus, but the rain itself isn't going to get you sick. While it's not a cold rain, it's not exactly warm either. Getting wet isn't really that big of a deal. Usually it only rains for 1-2 hours a day, but the last week or so has had some long duration rain, and not really that hard either. Now if you're going to Jaco, that's a totally different story, Jaco it can rain straight for days torrentially. Here in San Jose, though, it's not much of a problem. You take cab where you're going anyways, and a mini umbrella will help you with the rest. |

Getting wet doesn't make you sick. A cooler, moist environment does mean that the little bugs that do make you sick stay alive a lot longer in the air and on surfaces. Its why the cold and flu season starts when outside temperatures start dropping. A mini umbrella will help, non-porous shoes will keep your feet dry. |

I have a travel umbrella that opens and closes with a push of a button. Very packable and opens up to a large size. Of course an umbrella isn't alwayas enough during those deluges, as one time I was walking from the Amistad to ZB and my feet got soaked. Now I wear my GoreTex trail-running shoes when rain is possible. Wearing quick-drying synthetic clothing also helps; I don't wear anything cotton when in CR. Proved to be a wise move on my last trip when I got caught in a downpour while walking in Parque Sabana without an umbrella.
