Depends on the network that your card is honored on. I know Cirrus works in CR and I believe Plus does also.

Wachovia is a large bank so most likely someone on the board has experience using their debit card. Perhaps the question should be:

Does anyone know if a Wachovia debit card works in ATM's in Costa Rica?

There may be some debit cards from small banks that may not work here but I have never heard of anyone having a problem with a card not working here unless the network is down as happened one day this week and then no cards were working. Am sure all the major cards will work in the Bank ATMs here. I use a Bank of America Visa check card all the time here and have never had a problem.

As a fact, I have used Wachovia, Washigton Mutual, Capital One, TCF and NBD without any problems.

Thanks guys. Looks like I won't have any problems if I need extra cash (for the ticas of course) :D

I was in the DR last year and had no problem...except that it was all in Pesos

I just wanted to check since cell phones seem to be a problem in CR.

Almost all ATM's in Costa Rica dispense either USD or CRC.

I might have said that until my most recent trip where I hit 8 ATM's before I found one that would give me greenbacks, and none of them before would give me more than about $50 worth of colones!!!

Guess we do not frequent the same areas. I do not know of an ATM that does not give me a choice of USD or CRC. The ones I use occasionally have a shortage of USD but never CRC.

I have a VISA debit card (ATM card) from a little-bitty credit union that I joined when I was 16 years old. The card is good at all Cirrus, Star & Co-op network ATMs. I have literally used that card around the world. It is rare that I find an ATM that WON'T take the card. I have not found an ATM in C.R. that won't take my card.

Most of the Bank ATMs will dispense either Colones or $$. I have found that the Bank ATMs limit me to about $200 at a time. :x
In the HDR there is one ATM for $$, another for Colones.
I like the ATM in the Colonial Casino next door (East) of the HDR. It is in the far back of the first (ground) floor & would probably let you clean-out your account. I've not found it's limit!

Another great thing about my little-bitty credit union...
They have never-ever charged me a penny to use an ATM ANYWHERE! That rocks! The only ATM fees I ever pay are those charged by the ATM owner, e.g. the rip-off bank that owns the ATM or ATMs in convenience stores, etc.

The withdrawal limit is set by your bank/credit union not the machine. Some machines are set with a transaction limit. You can do multiple transactions until you reach the daily limit set by your card issuer.
