How safe is it to e-mail your credit card info for hotel, car rental, excursion packages, etc, reservations ??
Has anybody ever had any fraud trouble after e-mailing this info to Costa Rica ??

It is how most hotels operate in CR. It's not the best way to do things but you can easily dispute charges on most cards.

I scanned and emailed my cc info before trip #1 to the HDR. Trip #4 Memorial Day weekend and have encountered no problems yet.

First time i had to do it was my 4th trip in Dec.-No problems.

Credit cards have inherent fraud protection. If you get hit with a charge you didn't authorize, you don't pay...period. Don't let them (cc companies) jerk you around.

Make sure you use a credit card and not a debit card.

Just contact your credit card company and tell them that you will be using your card in CR. They will quickly assure you that any fraudulent charges will be taken care of. Make sure that you use a credit and not a debit card.

We are accustomed to a 99% + CC merchant transaction accuracy in the US and Canada. I would say the percent is lower in Costa Rica but not much lower. You simply need to verify more often.

There are several things you can do to minimize risk.

Use a low limit credit card that you don't use for anything else and it wont inconvenience you if you want or need to cancel it for any reason OR
simply call the CC company and ask them to change the CC number or Expiration date.

If you don't have a low limit cc, you can call and lower one of the others to a lower limit.

This will allow you to more easily audit these charges.

Example : Many of us have credit cards on file with monthly drafts-payments to companies such as Netflix, Online Shopping ie Ebay, Amazon, Monthly Insurance premiums , Airline Ticket Purchase Profiles , etc.

It would be an inconvenience to have to cancel these cards.

Always try to end your transactions with the cents as the day of the month or a usual amount like $0.77. Pay the difference in change.

This makes scanning CC statements easy because every charge that does not end in .77 will be suspect.

I'm tired of typing.

I was told my bank US Bank that US cards have an agreement with Visa international and all the merchant has to do is say the transaction took place period. Told I would have to take it up with the merchant in CR. I also have this in three letters received during a dispute I had with a CR bank.

That has to be the biggest load of crap I have ever heard.
Nobody would use a credit card, considering most countries still use carbon copy methods, and some minimum wage employee could just steal everyones card and go "tough luck, the charges are warranted".

You can dispute ANYTHING, ANYWHERE with VISA/Mastercard/Amex.

Very good advice amigo. I have a couple cards with low limits for the reasons listed.
