When I arrive in San Jose, how much is taxi fare to the gulch? Should I exchange money at the airport? If not, how do I get colones to pay the taxi?

Taxi window is on the left, right before you walk out the doors of the lower part of the airport (baggage area). I think it's up to $19 or $20 now. You can pay in USD. Don't get colones at the airport.

Two weeks ago, it was $20 even for a taxi to the SL from the airport. I also used the Scotia Bank ATM located next to the duty free by the baggage carousel while I waited for my bags that didn't arrive, courtesy of AA.

I withdrew 50K colones and the total deduction to my bank account was $101.48.

Actually, the airport is a good place to exchange dollars, but not down stairs (a complete ripoff) where you will exit. Walk across the street when you exit and go up the elevator. Renter the airport and go to the right down to the end. You'll see the major bank teller area next to where you pay for your exit tax. Have your pasport ready and you dollars. The rate is excellent. :D

Your bank gave you a rate of 492.70 which is outstanding. Some CR banks were 492.50 or 492.25 two weeks ago.

Unless the taxi driver is savvy to the crt crowd. He may spot a NEWBIE and decide to cruise around Marazon Park a few laps to show off all of the talent !
