Guys,

Did a search of the board and didn't find any reference. I smoke and should I bring enough smokes for my trip or are US brand smokes available there if needed? I assume I could hit the Duty Free store there and stock up as the cost here is getting crazy.

I have been told the the American brand cigarettes they sell here are made differently and have a different flavor than the ones in the US. I don't know if this is true because I no longer smoke. They are cheaper here but I know one guy that brings Marlboros back with him when he comes from the US .

You can try the ones they sell here and if you think they are the same then you can save money by loading up at the local duty free here and taking some back with you.

You should be able to find Marlboro lights. light menthol, Deby light and light mental all over at under $2/pack. I think I saw some other brands, but generally the selection is limited but still cheap by USA standards. A lot of the street vendors will sell "loosies" for just a few colones and they have a lighter on a string ready for you.

If you are into camels, winston, or some other brand you might be better off bringing your own. I don't recall what the duty threshold is, but I think it is 200 smokes before you pay duty.

Bring your own smokes.

Marlboro is made locally under license from the parent company. They are not imported from the US. They do not taste or burn the same, but for a buck 50 I smoke them.

The duty free shop in the airport runs a special if you buy in bulk 3 cartons. You can usually get three cartons for about $30. I smoke Camels and personally have not noticed a difference.
