I'm trying to figure out if the USD is accepted in MP's and Independents at the BM, SL and KL? I figure that restuants would like Colones, but do the ladies care?

Almost everyone in the gulch will take either USD or colones. You are better using colones at bars and restaurants as they will nail you on the exchange rate if you use $ and will give you change in colones.

Independents will almost always quote in $ and you are better off using them in that situation.

I've used both with the chicas with no problem....I do ask them first, to make sure it's alright. Restaurants, taxis, etc.....a little different. I think the taxis and Tico restaurants prefer colones.

The last night I was in San Jose [Feb. 11th] I had used up all my colones, and had only dollars on me. I was a little hungry, so I decided to go to one of the "true pillars of American enterprise"........McDonald's, where they had no problem at the cash register.....just push a button and convert the colone amount to dollars. :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. Most importantly, it's all about the ASS. It sounds like it's a good idea to have walking around money for shopping and local store fronts.
This group can't wait!!! We're hitting the streets Thursday morning the 27th!!!!

p.s. Paid for my VIP membership a few weeks ago (been invaluable so far). I requested my VIP card pick up at the ZB, is that still the case?

Use the local currency, i.e., colones. The MPs will kill you on the exchange rate if you use dollars. Trust me on this one.
