Try Calle Amargura in San Pedro. It is just a few blocks east of the San Pedro mall and has a lot of small bars frequented by students from the nearby University of Costa Rica.

Unless your under 35 its not a great place to pick up women. But for tutoring probably works well. Maybe do a quid pro quo thing.
The university chicas are not extremely interested in older gringos for the most part.

I went to a Club area called El Pelbo last week with my wingman and a couple of girls. Allot of college age people hanging out, not a place to go solo. There was a lot of people wanting to talk with gringo, but also a lot of people not liking Gringo's.

Brave ;)

The man speaks the truth, TONS of young people in Pueblo, also quite a few "professionals", but definitely not the kind of place you want to go alone.

Not a place you want to be either alone or with others very very late at night or early morning. Notorious for fights breaking out and ending with someone being shot or knifed.

Pueblo has a lot of people partying and having fun! There are a lot of people that enjoying talking to Gringo, but there is also a lot that do not like Gringo's at all here. It is a place to have fun, but keep your head on straight, i.e. DO NOT GET DRUNK & STUPID! I would insure you are in a small group of 3 to 4 people and at least one of the people fluent in Spanish (it can be a local). The staff's at the bars are great with Gringo and speak English, but it is good to have someone with you that speak Spanish also.

The crowds in general are 20 something and the music is loud dance music.

There are a lot of regular girls, semi-pro and profession girls here. I actually saw many girls from the popular Gringo MP's here. Without a question there is action here and fun, but it is a place to be smart and keep your head up! The bars open around 8 and the action starts picking up at 10, but I would be out of dodge by 12, no later than 1.

I was approach by 2 pimps and 1 drug dealer at the bar I was at, so it is the wild west, and not a place to be when it gets later and the crowd gets a little out of control! When we left at midnight the crowd on the street was a little rough too, so it is not a place to hangout on the street.

The Bars have VIP areas and that is where we were. The VIP areas, are bottle service, but a bottle with mixers were 23,000 c. Not bad for 4 people to split. The bar we were at the VIP area was up stairs over looking the main floor and a lot safer then being in the crowd downstairs. It was fun, but again be smart!!! It would not be hard to get yourself into trouble here, but there are a lot of HOT girls here having fun!

A side note, When I went last time two years ago they have the entrance blocked off with a entry bouncer and they do not allow shorts for entrance my buddy had to go back and get pants. Could have changed now though. But where pants regardless, no shorts and flower shirt.

That's why after hours, I hang mostly in the friendly confines of the Del Rey!

That sounds like the area I am looking for.
I can't find Calle Amargura on the map, does it have a number also ?
How far is it from Central Ave ?

from chepe, just head on into san pedro, like you're going to mall san pedro. go straight through the rotunda, and you'll see the outlet mall on your right, then a gas station right past that. go just a tiny bit past the gas station, not even a block i think, and you will see a stop light with a middle 'merge' lane, with usually taxis turning to the left. that is calle amargura.

the pizza at caccio's is rather good :)

The sanitation level of many of the places on Calle Amargura is not the best.  There is a constant battle between the business owners and the Health Department Inspectors.
