As you can tell I am new here. I have been to Phils a few times, never to CR. In phils, the dress code is shorts and a t shirt... whats the dress code there in CR?

By my observations you will see many gringos with tshirts, flowery shirts, shorts, and flipflops - very casual but you will certianly look like the grinco. The Ticas seem to wear jeans or black slacks and polo and button-down shirts.

There seems to also be a shortage of denim here as the Ticas' jeans don't waste as acrap of cloth on their jeans....tight, tight, tight

Yes, but I would try not to wear open toed shoes in the evening. Even walking out of a cab into a place you want to watch wear you step

Drone, although you will see some dance clubs (if you wish) CR isn't the same in terms of discos, (chicas wanting you to take them and show you off as a trophy) like in the P.I. or Thailand. Dress the way you did in those places and it will be fine.

I am of the personal opinion, based on hard unfortunate experience, that if you wear shorts and a loud shirt you stand out and shout rob me to passing robbers in a car.

I try to blend in as much as I can. I keep my fanny pack under my shirt.

Others disagree and wear shorts.

When I travel, I wear pants, e.g., Chino pants, and a shirt, e.g., the Land's End variety. I only wear shorts and t-shirts on the beach. Likewise, even in the U.S., I wear shoes not sneakers. I tend to be on the conservative side, and want to avoid looking like the U.S. tourist as much as possible.

Some clubs do require long pants and sleeves and no hats. short pants are a dead giveaway that you are a gringo tourist. No big deal hanging arounf the gulch but at night you stasnd out more.

Solid advice, IMHO. Being sensitive to cultural norms not only goes far toward keeping you safe, but also towards quality service.

Thanks for the advice... after spending amonth in the PI, getting used to wearing pants again has been pain. I fell in love the t shirt/shorts. Never want to wear a collard shirt again. Oh, and of course the girls were fantastic... as well as a lovely place to visit.

Of all the clubs Ive been to in PI, all but 1 let you wear a hat, all let you wear shorts, for as long as they arent like surfing or boarder shorts, but anything casual was OK. Most require a button up or polo style shirt.

Most also dont allow flip flops.

I don't care what most of us white/black Americans wear, your Gringo A#$ stands out like a sore thumb. Chino pants, button shirt, and nice shoes will not make 90% of us look Tico.
