Forget traveler's checks. Bring cash. Figure out how much you'll need and then bring 50% more.
Seriously, just bring a lot of cash. As soon as you get into your room, lock it up in the safe and only keep on you what you'll need for that session/day/night when going out. If you don't bring enough, you can always take out cash at an ATM. Use a bank ATM or one of the two at HDR. Tell your bank you will be in CR so they don't decline you when you try to get cash.
Also, don't try to plan the "perfect" 5 days, because THERE IS NO SUCH THING ahead of time, since everybody's tastes are different. When you get there and you feel the place out a little, you'll realize what you like most. Plans change quickly.
. T.C.s saved my ass. My bank (Wells Fargo) gives them to me for free so why not. I would take a few for back up. I also used one in Montezuma at the supermarket when I stayed longer than planned(no atm in town). The way I see it why not take a few for backup. You can always turn them back into the bank at home.
