Hello. I have a T-mobile cell phone and I would like to know if it will work in San Jose. Does anyone know? If it will word, do I need to do anything special (eg. unlock, change SIM card, etc.) to make it operational? Or, should I just be able to turn it on and get a signal? Thanks.

As far as I know, Singular is the only system which works in C.R. other than their own I.C.E. cellular. Your phone has to be GSM compatible, if memory serves me. Calls are expensive at around three bucks/minute.

Public telephone service is good. Skype works well. Sportsmen's Lodge offers direct dial calls to the U.S. very cheap from your room... in other words, there are lots of options.

Do a search on Cellular Rental here. There may be other, less restrictive and less expensive options than I've mentioned here.

You may do better to simply purchase a local calling card from a pharmacy. It worked fine, and was very inexpensive.

here's the deal, as I have investigated thoroughly this issue.

Tmobile must be caled to turn on Int'l Servce, the phones come locked to (protect you, yeah right) Oce turned on, you have an optional service of 1.09 per minute in CR.

Better (what I do) option, if your phone is a Nokia model like mine, go to this web site and unlock it http://www.nokiafreeunlock.com/unlockin ... ountry=131

(IF Different than Nokia not sure of unlocking procedures, but I do know quite a few web sites offering it for s charge of $ 5-10.....

Once your phone is unlocked, I rent a sim chp in CR for less than 10.00 per day with 1.25 per minute to call int'l (USA)

Here is that web site. nice guy named Enrico willhalp you with anything you need.

If you would like any more info, feel free to PM me.

You forgot to post the website. It is:

www.cellulartelephonerentals.com

have spoken with quite a few guys and they all were very satisfied with the service that Rico provided.

I have a T-mobile cell. You have to call T-mobile to turn one International
roaming. Once this is done your cell will automaticlly recognize ICE cell service in CR. The cost is around $1.25/min so don't chat all day. Also is very convienent for call us but again expensive so keep calls short.

I confirm DB's description of T-Mobile's roaming service. Once you arrive to CR an d turn your Cell on, it will take about a minute or two for the I.C.E. network to be recognized. The LCD will go from "NO SERVICE" to "ICE". There's no need to change the card.

I used mine quite a bit at first, but once I saw my next bill and realized the cost of the calls, I decided to use it ONLY for emergencies and in case there's an urgent message from the States. Whenever they call from the states they will not hear the usual ring we have in the US. It will be a long tone, almost sounds as a busy tone but it is longer in duration. Just like in Europe.

You can also call in country numbers. When you do, there's no need to dial the 506 area code, the last seven numbers will do. When calling the US you need to dial the International access number, area code and the number. CR calls are $1.09, and international calls are $1.99 per minute.
Here at home I have Sprint charging me $3.00 monthly for the International access and 0.24 per minute.

It is a nice convenience but it can add up if you are not careful.
Good luck!

I have T-Mobile, with worldwide service activated. I can make calls from SJO, but not sure what network it is on. Ypu need to activate the service with T-Mobile and have a GSM capable phone. Expensive (I think $1.99/min) but worth it for the convenience. I just limit my time on the phone to the bare minimum and let most go to voice mail.

I just returned and had no problem making or receiving calls with my T-Mobile phone. There's no charge for activation and no monthly charge but the rates are steep, as others have mentioned.
