I have searched all over and have not found an answer to a question.

I live in Florida, I wear sandals 365 days a year, I know sandals are not accepted footwear in some countries for adult males. Would I have a problem wearing them in SJ.

Only if it bothers you to be immediately labeled a "tourista" It is the same a wearing shorts  . Tico's do not wear shorts or sandals in San Jose but they are not going stone a gringo tourist

Off course you could always get a brown blanket, fashion it into a robe, tie a white rope around your waist and pretend to be a Franciscan Monk doing missionary work  :P  :P

Hi GB:

The whole time I was in CR the only thing I wore on my feet were sandals, day and night. No one Tico, Tica, Gringo ever mentioned it to me. It would be hard for me to be taken as a native anyway. Fat, old, grey haired white man, I'm sure that I stuck out like a light bulb to a bug. If you can walk outside the Presidente without the shoeshine boy , or the dude who swears he is from California (yeah right), hitting you up you may not look like a "tourista".

What really matters matters to the ladies is the mean green. Treat them well, have a wad, pre-negotiate, and your wildest dreams can come true.

Health & happiness.

GB,
There won't be any negative repercussions against you, those "rules" don't apply to tourists. It's not like anybody will mistake you for a Tico if you wear shoes, so you might as well be comfortable.

On my last trip, I passed a group of teens & overheard them calling me a gringo because of my shorts. I didn't care...I just can't do without them when in CR....

You would stand out, but all of us gringos do. So what. Wear what you like. If you are planning on rafting you will need strap on sandals. Forget the zapatos if your rafting. I can remember many a zapato floating downstream with no owner.

Thanks for the info, I guess I can wear sandals, the only place I plan to loose them is under the bed. I cant Phu*k while white water rafting so I doubt I will take that in.

Heck no, in general . Make sure you wear the type that gives your feet more protection though, in case you have to get up and run
