I've been a VIP since September and have a trip planned for later this month. Should be a fun trip now that I've learned so much from reading and researching.

Question is.. How long has this site been around?

Oh... and how do I get rid of the "Newbie" designation?

TMan was the third person to sign up after Admin 1 & 2. That was Aug 27, 2003. Somewhere around 21 guys joined on the first day.

"Newbie" is determined by the number of posts. I joined in August 2004. Somewhere around 7 months later I took my first trip. I have made 7 trips with tour of duty # 8 coming up in 8 days.

Your designation changes with the amount of times you post so just keep posting. A trip report when you get back would be a good start :D

Welcome aboard

Hey Berk, I will be at HDR from 10/9 - 10/16. I have read many of your informative posts, and I feel as though I owe you a beer. Hope to see you there.

It looks like I joined the second day and had my Top Twenty Tips posted a month later.

This board was formed as a reaction to another failed board. That board was a spinoff from the original "Redsnake" board and another more Mexico oriented forum which had postings by the famous Tampa Gringo. Some of Tampa Gringo's fishing observations can be found on www.dongordo.com

Tampa Gringo is now retired (married a Tica) and living and working in SJO.

My first trip to SJO was 30 years ago on an airline employee familarization trip with my then wife who worked for Alitalia.
My second trip was 15 years ago as a cruise ship passenger at Punta Arenas with a girlfriend, the ship's nurse.
My next trip was in September 2000 with some buddies I met in a bar in Atlanta who knew where the Hotel Del Rey was located so we stayed there. It turned into a two week trip. I made the typical new visitor mistakes, without benefit of a forum.

I was hooked and made another trip a month later and met some other guys who are now members of this forum and the rest is history. They introduced me to some of their "girlfriends" who became our "girlfriends" and remain friends to this day. I have made about 17 trips and am slowing down.

I wrote my Top Twenty Tips and What to Bring To Costa Rica to help other new visitors avoid the mistakes I made.
