Gents,

Can someone refresh my memory?

I know it's been posted before but, again what is the best route to Jaco-flying or driving?

I noticed that neither Sansa or Nature Air shows Jaco on their itenery websites.

Thanks much

Well, if you HAVE to go to Jaco (I don't like the place, myself), I don't believe there is air service, but really it's close enough that you can hire a taxi (I think you can get somebody to drive you for maybe $50) or take one of the posh minivans (it's in tour books, I forget the name offhand) or take one of the regular busses, which will run you two or three dollars. The trip will take from 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic and whether the bus is direct or not. The minivans run quite a bit more but less than a taxi.

As far as Jaco goes, Quepos/Manuel Antonio is a nicer town and set of beaches and San Jose is much better for mongering. But if you need both at once, I guess Jaco is the place. It's been said before but bears repeating that Jaco is a den of thieves. If you can get out of there without losing a camera or something you have done well. Pura Vida.

There have been several posts on Jaco transportation in the past but I will summarize my own experience with the public bus from Coca Cola terminal. It costs somewhere around $2.50 each way, plus your cab fare to CC terminal of course, which will add up if you go there a day early as well to buy your ticket. If I do it again, and I probably will in November, I plan to find out if there is another way to buy your ticket ahead of time. They are large, very comfortable Mercedes Benz busses with reserved seating. The downside is they are not air conditioned, though that really was not an issue once we were rolling down the road. I do not know if there is an express bus, but mine made several stops along the way, and more on the way back. Surprisingly, the trip still only took about 2 1/2 hours.

If this sounds like a little too much local color, there are more gringo-oriented options. Several companies offer smaller, air conditioned busses for around $20 each way, with pickup and drop off at your hotel. As I mentioned, if you take the public bus, buy your ticket ahead of time to avoid getting shut out. I read that hint but forgot it, and wound up having to sit around the terminal for about 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon waiting for the next bus. Two hours in a bus terminal is no more fun in San Jose than it would be at the Greyhound terminal at 12th and Arch Sts in Philadelphia. :x

Excellent points. Apparently it's kind of a kick in the balls to get there and back.

Having never been to Jaco I had this vision of a surf city paradise with huge waves and nice beaches (based on Hype and stories).

I think I'll stay with San Jose for now.

thanks much for the info.

Kick in the balls? No, just put your ass on a bus, taxi or hire a driver and go!
(There's no airport so good luck flying)

You might be a little disappointed with that fantasy but usually a fun trip nonetheless, the fish tacos are worth the trip. :)

Hey Guys,
This is my first post on the site, so I'm just commenting to see how it goes on the board and how the signature looks.

Anyway, I was just reading about Jaco on here. My friend Sheep and I will be there on Sat for the weekend. I'll give a trip report when we get back to the USA. I'm not lugging a laptop around Central America. Don't want any girlies making off with my Dell while I'm toweling off Mr. Happy.
