3. Unless you see an accent mark (and they're always placed over vowels), the second to the last syllable is the one stressed. "pah - NOH-chah" "sehr-VEH-zah"
:D

That is only true if the word ends in a vowel, an "N", or an "S". Otherwise, it is the last syllable is stressed (i.e. habLAR, coMER, verDAD, muJER, aMOR, etc.).

Thanks for the correction. You're absolutely right. :)

Can one of the vets record the phrases on the 1st page as an audio file (ex, MP3) and post them? I think it's best for non-Spanish speaking newbies like myself to hear them as well as read them.

Many thanks to you vets.

If she says "Yo tengo SIDA" you might want to find a different girl.

Sarpe (SAHR-peh) = The last drink of the night, one for the road.

This is a tico joke, because the ticos often order one sarpe after another. It is said that "sarpe" is the biggest tico lie.

For those of you who were asking for an audio file with these phrases, I recorded them for ya:

The audio files were deleted when I changed ISP's. I will try to put them back up.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Here is another link you can use for translating any word or phrase from one language to another.

http://babelfish.altavista.com/

I use this site all the time to translate web pages and it works "muy bueno". 8)

A couple weeks ago as I was in the check-out line at Wal-Mart I glanced over to the candy bars and someone had stuck a copy of "SPANISH I" by Cliff's Quick Review (maker's of "Cliff's Notes) into the rack.

I made a quick flip through it and it looked pretty good. It has all the basics that I never learned since I've never had a formal Spanish class.

It's 195 pages in 17 Chapters with a review, glossary, thematic vocabulary, verb charts and idiomatic expressions (256 pages overall).

It was $9.95 and I would recommend it for anyone who wants to know the "proper" way to speak Spanish and why. There are some very good and helpful rules and examples. I've even learned a few things about English grammar that I'm sure I slept through in high school.

It's a quick read and much easier and less formal than a text book.
Unfortunately somebody had lost or taken the "Free pocket guide for quick reference".

Sorry about the length of the link.

I'm glad I bought my copy of Hot! Spanish! for $9.95 before Bruce of TSM bought the entire supply from the original publisher.

That was about 7 years ago. I would be surprised if there are even any left.

Leave it to him to mark up what should be a $4.95 book by 100%.

Of course you do get a CD of old photos. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of mine on there. If anyone as a copy of the CD I would appreciate a copy just to see.

My spanish is only at the basic survival level; but 3 books that I have found quite useful:

Hide this spanish book
by Berlitz. Specializes in slang.

Guide to Costa Rica Spanish by Christopher Howard. Muy Tico.

Everyday Spanish-1001 most common words and phrases. Alot of words very similar to English.

None are very intense, you just need to put in the time & practice when around Spanish speakers.
