One thing you need to be aware of. If people call you and the lines are too busy they will be told all international lines are busy. Just thought you need to know in case you are disappearing. Also, you must leave your phone on for your Voicemail to work. Besides those issues I have used it on 3 trips and it works great. |

Before you go, call Cingular and make sure you have international roaming. Tell them specifically you will be travelling to Costa Rica. dapanz1 |

This isn't good news. When I was in Thailand I had no problems using their sister network and ID. In Costa Rica, even though I have the international roaming setup, my calls will still show up unknown? I was hoping to cut the phone off for most of trip, but with the problems listed above I'm having doubts. Hell. Being this is a clandestine trip, I might be better off in Thailand than CR! |

Actually, if you have Cingular, you should call and ask for the WORLD CONNECT PROGRAM. It will reduce your standard $2.99 per minute rate to under 15 cents per minute (don't quote me but I think it's either 11 or 14 cents per minute). Ruffnutz |

Dapanz, My understanding is yes. I was just on a 10-day business trip to Brazil, and my costs for calling from Brazil to USA on my cell phone calls dropped from 2.99 a minute to .14 a minute by switching to the World Connect Program. The rate of calling from CR to USA is somewhere in that same ballpark with the World Connect Program as well. If you have a Cingular cell phone, just dial 611 and talk to your customer service rep to join that program (which costs 3.99 per month... it more than pays for itself after 2 minutes on the phone overseas). They'll give you the specific price per minute depending on where in the world you will be. Ruffnutz |

Ruffnutz Hate to blow your expense budget but I think you are way off. I used to work for Cingular and CR has always been a rip off. Up until recently there was no discount for World Connect calls from CR. The rate was 2.29 per minute with or without the World Connect. I just checked the website and as of July there now is a discount for world Connect users from 2.29 (without) to 1.99 (with). So there is a little bit of a break. It would take about 20 minutes to break even with the 5.99 monthly fee. Unfortunately, Brazil is the exact same, 2.29 to 1.99. So, Ruffnutz if you think the rate was .14 you will be surprised when the bill comes. If you makes calls frequently from outside of the US, the World Connect program is a must. To get to a listing of Cingular's standard rates vs. world connect rates click the link below and then under International roaming click the link called "Compare with standard rates." http://www.cingular.com/media/Affordabl ... theWorld#1 Sorry I could not link straight to it. |

With my new found attitude about travel and what is necessary/unnecessary for a trip I may be leaving my cell at home. I'm supposed to be on vacation. The most efficient way to call home is using an ICE (PHONE MONOPOLY) calling card. My last recollection is that the charge is $1.99/minute and .25 roaming charge. Basically $2.25/minute. This has been my experience when I have received my phone bill. I think the program Ruff may be referring to is calling from the US to foreign country. I pay additional each month for discounts calling CR .25/minute direct and the Dominican Republic. Don't remember the charge for DR, haven't used it in awhile. Additionally, if calling CR is a concern, I STRONGLY recommend the calling card available to CRT members from Tel-3. Access it directly from this site. First purchase gets additional minutes. dapanz1 |
