Do US cell phones work in CR? I doubt they do, just want to confirm.

Also, one of the guys I am coming down with asked if it the women, say at the DR, would allow you to take two of them at one time up to your room. Perhaps picking one and allowing her to bring "her friend".

TIA

Only Cingular and TMobile will work outside of North America. They use GSM as does 90% of the world. Verizon and Sprint use CDMA which is only useful in the US, Canada. Mexico and one of the Koreas.

GSM phones use a SIM card or chip that has to be inserted in the phone for activation. Verizon has a phone that they call a world phone and accepts SIM cards. The problem as I understand is they do not have roaming agreements with carriers in most countries so calls will not work or rates will be crazy expensive. They do have agreements with a few of the popular countires like UK, France, Italy.

For international roaming you will need to be on Cingular or TMobile.

I answered a post on the general board that may shed additional light as well.

Cingular works very well. It is expensive though and there is nothing you can do to get the rate much below 1.99 a minute.

Fallon,

It was painfully apparent to me that no one addressed your 2nd question. I guess it's because they were surprised you actually asked it.

The answer should be: Are you kidding?!!!

That would be a big, loud - Y E S ! ! !

Expect to pay at least 1 1/2 x normal rate (Normal meaning whatever that chica feels is her normal rate).

Welcome to the board, and get ready to dive in. As you can tell by my ticker below, I'm about to dive in myself.

I take it that the normal rate is around $50, so I should expect about $75 per Tica?

And by browsing the board, it looks like the DR has "stiffer" prices. Would $75 be "normal" for the DR?

Fallon,

Sorry for the delay, but as you can see from my ticker below, I've been traveling.

I almost don't want to answer your question, for fear of the response from all the oldtimers. But, here goes:

One down (since my arrival); it cost me the standard CRT VIP $40 at Zona Blue (and was terrific).

However, in the gulch proper (Del Rey, Key Largo), expect chicas to start at Cien ($100), but most all will fall quickly. It also depends on what you are asking (i.e. "una hora" (one hour), "toda la noche" (all night), etc...).

I have seen really hot chicas ask dos cientos ($200) with a straight face. Too rich for my blood, while in CR.

I would say that $75 is a good average in the gulch.

I hope this helps you plan financially for your 1st adventure in CR.

My friends and I will be staying at the DR from 6/29 - 7/4. My plan after browsing a lot of the posts on the board was to take down a couple hun in US$ and get the rest out of the ATM at DR.

Thanks for the price advice. $75 for una hora and ~$150 for toda la nocha is what I'll aim for....let me know if I'm off base in this or the money that I am bringing down.

I figure since we are going to be there for 5 nights, we would hit a couple of the strip bars...saw some posts on the medium end, not the upscale, don't run a tab places that looked good. It seems like they have private rooms there that you can get happy endings in.

Became a CRT VIP as well, so we'll definitely check out ZB during the day. Am I right thinking they have a bar so we can relax a bit before heading in the back/upstairs/etc?

Yes - ZB does have a nice bar that has been remodeled within the past year. (My last visit was in March 06)

I dont believe that you will find a lady to spend the entire night at the Del Rey for $150 unless it's 3 in the am. Tough but not impossible.

I am a 3 trip vet now and on trip #1 (2 years ago) a compadre tried practically all night in vain to get an overnight tica. He did not succeed and he tried all four nights.

Be ready for the eye candy to pinch back! $75 a session could be an average but I would recommend $80. It's going to be hard to hold from paying $100 to the hottest ladies but there will be other fish in the sea of Del Rey - it will be like Piranha and you are the bait fish with some blood.

Work on your basic spanish as well.

Great idea to get colones from the ATM's. In that way you don't lose with exchanging currency with the hotel cashier. Make certain your bank knows that you will be in Costa Rica to avoid any ATM hassles.

Depending on how much frisky activity you will be doing, I would say $300 to $400 in USD would be sufficient for a 5 night stay.

Try to get your exit visa ($26) done when you arrive at the airport versus on the way out. I always hate dealing with lines on the way home.

Budget $12 to $15 each way for taxi expense from the airport.

Am working on a return trip for the end of July 06.

Good luck.

SF :)
