Post subject:  Pictures of Costa Rican Currency

I'm planning my first trip and I searched around for pictures of the currency so I could get familiar. I came accross a good website with photos so I thought I would share....

You won't see much of the bills below 1000. Below 1000 all I got were coins.

So that's what nuevo dinero looks like, none of my old, worn, stinky, dirty, tattered, sticky CR bills ever look like that! :P

That site is either very very outdated or it is geared to collectors.

The smallest paper currency in circulation is the 1000 colones note.

The smallest coin currently being used is the 5 colones coin. Occasionally you might find a 1 colones coin but they are not in general use.

Hey Thanks Markrli –

That is the most complete list of the currency I have seen on the web, since browsing CR for a few years. I thought I had the whole collection of coins and bills, but I see I have a few more to acquire. Anyone have a 20 or 50 bill in good shape you want to sell?

LOL - I can actually remember getting a 500 bill in change at the BM bar, and tried to spend it back in the same sitting. Only to hear “Sorry we don’t take these anymore”.

The others are correct, anything less than a 1,000 bill or 5 coin you will seldom see.

Hmmm, 5 centimos – how much is that USD? I am a little too buzz right now to figure that…

Some other stuff on that site is ¡muy Chiva! (very cool – from his list of ‘dichos tiquisimos’). Some of these I hadn’t seen either. I liked the 360 degree photos. Interesting and informative website.

Gracias, BTW it looks like I am in SJO when you are.

I remember those 5 colones bills and that 1/10th of a colone coins.
The exchange rate was 85 colones to the dollar. I remember asking wth that little coin was worth the lady kinda just shrugged. Anyway if you still have any 5 colone bills i think they are worth alot.

I felt like a millionaire back in those days!

They are for sale in every souvenir shop in San Jose. You also can buy them from a vendor in Plaza Cultural in front of the Gran Hotel Costa Rica.

Do not know how many are still around but they are popular souvenirs because of the picture on the reverse.
