I just got back from SJ, and felt lucky to, based on a friend's recommendation, have stayed at the Sportsmen's Lodge.

I would appreciate reading some other views on where to stay.

Check out the reviews under the Hotel section of the Presidente, Amon Plaza, Castio, ect ect. That is where you will find a ton of info..

Another way to check on where to stay:
1. Go to the old board
2. Look for posts by badabing.

if you're feeling adventurous, you may, seriously, wish to consider checking out some of the Tico style hotels such as the Hotel Nuevo Johnson...

Hotel Castillo on Avenida 13 is a rising star. I paid $42 (with 25% CRT discount) per night for a very nice standard room. No chica fees, either. Darren and his staff are very friendly and accommodating. The price includes taxes and a full breakfast. Sonny's Bar and Grille is conveniently located next door, and there is even a cozy open-air bar and eating area. Beginning May 1st, the price drops to $35 per night during the Green Season. The hotel is just two blocks west of the SL, a short walk to ZB, NF...and a little bit of a longer walk to the gulch (about 500 - 1000 C cab fare depending upon the time of day). I highly recommend it! www.hotelcastillo.biz

Hey Panther,

Hotels in San Jose can be divided into two classes: Chica-friendly, and not worth considering.

The topic of hotels is so often discussed here that an entire section exists on this forum devoted to hotel reviews and travel information. Go there. Or, use the Search function to find reveiws on any of the following chica-friendly hotels:

In no particular order:

Hotel Nuevo Johnson - $10.00/night

Hotel Doral - $20.00/night, includes breakfast

Clarion/Amon Plaza (Crt discount arranged through the casino manager, Nixon)

Hotel Castillo

Hotel del Rey

Hotel Presidente

Sportsmen's Lodge

Hotel Asia

Hotel Gran Via (NOT Gran Hotel costa Rica)

Costa Rica Casino Hotel Morazan (NOT Casa Morazan B.&B.)

Hotel Europa (NOT Radisson Europa)

Holiday Inn Arroyo

Best Western San Jose

Casa Vino

Balmoral (Very expensive "guest fee" for bringing a chica to your room).

Park Hotel (just kidding)

I'm sure I may have forgotten a couple. Just do a search. Aside from the Sportsmen's Lodge, a lot of guys here enjoy the Morazan, Presidente, del Rey and Clarion/Amon Plaza. For a deluxe apartment style experience, it's hard to beat Casa Vino. Apartment hotels "aparthotels") such as the Vista Linda, Rincon de San Jose and Sudamer are also popular.

Hope this helps. Use the Search function, read reviews in the Hotel section...you've got a world of information here.
