I don't want to see anyone banned - and I certainly am not the type to go crying to an administrator about someone's post. In fact, some of the trolls and sock puppets we get on a regular basis I really get a kick out of - in fact on 2 levels - the fact that they are trolls, and the fact that if you question them, some of the more gullible guys will get down on you for doing so

(And at the same time the troll and the sock puppet is laughing at how dumb some guys are, and the trouble he stirred up)

When you are a dweeb, you have to take in all the possible consequences - and if you are a troll, same rule applies - anyway, you are posting now - so another BS post about how some guys got you banned - NOT.

Alrighty then, maybe someone who's been here on and off for 14+ years (living here full time for 10 out of those 14 years), has mongered for all of that time, now speaks Spanish fluently should weigh in?

If you're outside the gulch which is a tiny part of Costa Rica I never visit -

If you walk up to a Tico and say "Donde estan las Ticas?" (Where are the Ticas?) he will look a little confused, smile and say "everywhere". He has no clue you mean whores.

If you then followup with "Donde estan las chicas?" (Where are the babes?) and he is one of the smarter Ticos (a rare breed indeed) he will now begin to follow that you mean whores or something along those lines. If he speaks any English he will now attempt to explain you mean to say "putas" or something like that, if you refuse to learn, he will write you off as yet another obtuse Gringo and give you the directions to Del Rey.

Incidentally, if you pose the second "chica" question directly to some Tico dude he will think you mean just regular hot party girls and point you to the nearest night club. Only one of the rare smarter Ticos will do the math and realize you mean whores.

In other words, chica is also NOT synonymous with whore for native Spanish speakers.

Having said that, local parlance/colloquialisms are big especially if you're in a country where you don't speak the language. So if you are in the gulch and the accepted term for whore is now "chica"* it would be best to just stick to that. No sense in confusing your hosts even further by using a term that means something else.

*You might ask that for a guy with my supposed credentials, why don't I know for certain what the gulch term for whore is - Like I said, I rarely if ever go to the gulch. My model delivery guys converse with me in Spanish and I do the same with the girls even if they speak broken English since I generally have no patience with a Ticos (general term for Costa Ricans of all genders when used in this context) butchering the English language. I do not use English with a Tico unless they are relatively fluent in which case I only speak to them in English.

Now, I haven't lived in Costa Rica for 14 years, but I have been visiting since 1995.

And I daresay I speak Spanish as (or more) fluently than most people here. I think it's been explained several times what "chica" really means, as well as it being used as CRT shorthand to refer to women who sell sex as it is a much nicer word than "puta". It has the added benefit of being impossible to misinterpret as alluding to a particular nationality or ethnicity.

And not that it means anything, but I've been mongering for decades.

Or, as I witnessed waaay back when at the Hotel Camino Real (now the Intercontinental Escazu and definitely outside the Gulch ), he may react like several tico gentlemen did when a gringo approached their group one night and started asking repeatedly where could he find ticas.

At first the ticos reacted with confusion: "Huh? They're all over Costa Rica."

The gringo insisted he was looking for ticas because "ticas sell their pu*sy".

Once the ticos realized the gringo was asking for putas, they got annoyed and got into a shouting / pushing match with the poor gringo.

Thankfully it didn't escalate into something uglier because hotel security jumped in and clarified the situation.

MH's point is well taken and I kinda already alluded to that in my original post. Having said that, I was also pointing out that CRT shorthand of "chica" would not work outside the gulch assuming it works in the gulch.

I updated the M&S post years ago saying I would never visit again and I didn't. Yes, those girls worked at a MP. Yes, they were whores.

The $300 ******* are semi-pros. This is not how they make a living. This is not even their #1 priority. Half the time, they're out on modeling/lingerie shoots to Guanacaste and are unavailable. Only available when they're not working.

Any time (BY DEFINITION!) a women receives compensation directly or indirectly for performing a sex act, she is a PRO in the same sense that in sports if a person is compensated for playing, he is considered a "PRO"!! The first time she receives compensation, she has placed herself in the position of being a prostitute (puta) -someone who is compensated for sex. She may never do it again but she is/was still a prostitute. Many would say or ask "Where do you draw the line between a prostitute and a "slut" (one who likes sex or likes pleasing guys, or likes all the attention she gets for having sex freely with a lot of guys)" or even a "wife"?

I understand what you were trying to say when you used the word "PRO" but (in my opinion) that is not the correct word to use. Maybe "PART-TIMERS", maybe even "SEMI-PRO" though I am not sure just how one can be "partly" a puta.
