I have never tried to exchange Euros here but the BCR banks all show the current exchange rate for Euros right along with that of the Dollar on the TV screens in the banks. Based on that I would assume it is no problem changing Euros to colones. Just be sure you have your passport with you (not a copy) as you can not change money in the banks without it.

I was just there a couple of weeks ago.
Really appreciated the advise on the money changing upstairs.
I changed $500 immediately.
And yes, saving 13% is a big deal.
If you could make 13% on your money you would be a rich man.
Bernie Madoff was paying people 10% on their money and had many customers as he screwed them.

BB57 – thanks for the info. After I posted the question I remembered that Iberia flies direct from Madrid. It is logical that the banks are able to handle currency from a flight that happens every day.

That nite, Colonial Casino for up to $300.

In the morning any bank (if open) can convert for you.

The Colonial Casino (immediately next to the Del Rey) is always a good option. It's open 24 hours, and you don't need to show your passport to exchange money. They use a good exchange rate - - I believe better than any hotel. At a bank, you may get a slightly better exchange rate, but you will probably have to wait in a slow line.

Is Colonial now exchanging without question? Last time I tried to exchange there (probably 2 years ago), they asked me if I'm going to play and what I will play, then said they only exchange to players.

There are two cajas. The one to the front (Ave 1 entrance) will only change if playing most of the time. The one to the back has never questioned me and I change dollars there almost every week. Have changed from $100 to $300 with no problems. If you are changing $100 bills the "pit boss/floor manager" will have to "inspect" the bill(s).

Have been told that they are tied to the Scotia bank exchange rate. It does usually match that bank and is almost always within one colon of the National Banks rate. Almost never a line and as mentioned you do not have to have any ID.

By the way, the same chicas work both cajas, so why will they change money at the back and not the front?? Muy Tico!!!!

Guests at Sleep Inn are told they can convert in Colonial, and this is why the back counter is better to use than the front one. You can convert up to 1k a day if you have a Sleep Inn door key. Without, it's subjective. I've had the pit boss refuse $300 and only permit $200.

I tried to exchange in the cage near the craps table, that's the back one. Maybe I just came across a bitchy employee.

Orange, who gave you the problem, the counter chica or the pit boss?
