Haha not so much there, Bs. This is the Newbies section. Some of the veterans are trying to give good advice to the new guys so that they might have a good experience and not end up a statistic.

If you are King Stud, then no problemo, just skip this section and have fun with your balls.

San Jose is dangerous and there have been muggings at 9am in the morning! I would try to blend in! Tourists are of course the fav targets. I've done this in numerous not-so-friendly countries around the world and people did ignore me. Sun-glasses and a local hat help a lot.

Hahahaha!
Well I am Canadian and I wear shorts & T shirts and also Bum running shoes always when on vacation.
And as I noticed last year while in san jose it did not matter what you wore . I even was out the one day with jeans & short sleave shirt and they still noticed I was a visitor on vacation. And what they noticed was not me but my smokes was what they noticed.
So if you smoke & wish to blend in don't smoke american or canadian smokes . Cause I found the women who smoke in san jose will chase after you if they love your brand of smokes.
And they do love Canadian smokes for sure !Dam du Maurier smokes are gonna kill me with all the dam sex I get with them in costa rica !
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I am at a bit of an advantage I suppose because I speak fluent Spanish ( I Ma Cuban, thus the moniker) and because hell, I look latino although I am a little darker than a Tico and my Spanish accent is Cuban.

Anyway, when I am in CR I generally wear pants (shorts if I am on a tour are okay), light boots due to the wonderful sidewalks (damn near stepped in an open manhole once checking out a couple of ticas), and generally nothing with writing on it (Saprissa is okay, but not any Mets stuff. Yankees okay though! Ja Ja!). Finally, I do not speak english when I am there unless I have to (like around most of you guys).

Does this make me blend in like a Tico? No, but it does make me look like a non-American. Not that being American is bad, but being perceived as American means being perceived as having plenty of money.

Usually the Ticos and Ticas guess I am either Cuban, Venezuelan, or Colombian! They also usually do not believe me when I say I am from the USA!

Hey Bang Bang 57, you can attest to this since I took the tour with you Memorial Day weekend. You doing another one next weekend?

There's really nothing a gringo-looking gringo can wear to blend in. So why be uncomfortable wearing khakis and dressy shirts in warm/hot weather? Wear comfortable clothing. If you like shorts and a t-shirt, wear them, there's no law against it.

Besides, it's not the clothing that is disrespectful or insulting, it's the attitutudes of some of these gringos. It's such an embarrassment when there are these assholes in the streets, loudmouths, cursing every other word, and just being dickheads in general, while there may be K*ds and families around. And that's when they're sober, forget when they're drunk. These are the same jerks who openly degrade and/or insult the chicas right in front of everybody else. I often wonder how these idiots make it out of CR alive.

Don't act like one of these assholes and you'll be fine, no matter what you wear.

That's just about right and there is no problem looking like a tourist or being "perceived" like a tourist.

we're not stalked like so many posters here imply

also, for some reason, old ticos don't seem to get grey hair nor bald so that just about cuts the heart out of any chance for most of us to blend in no matter how we dress

It's very hard to not look like a gringo, especially if you're white. But I think many of the suggestions made will help you not to look like a Monger. Flip flops, shorts and a wife beater out with a girl that might be half you age will instantly attract attention to you as a monger and her as a whore. Now in one of the clubs that doesn't mean alot but if you ever went outside to eat at a restaurant, then it's entirely different. No one likes negative attention, especially girls. Not to mention, some people don't like mongers or whores and you never know what special seasonings you or her might get in your food.

Latin culture dresses more conservatively than American culture. People dress up more, just for the chance to look thier best. Your money will overcome the girls hesitation to go out with, no offense someone who dresses like a bum in her culture but dressing nice can only have benefits to making a connection.

I think the real concern here is not so much to blend in or not look like a Gringo (derogatory term), but to be smart about what you wear from a safety standpoint. No flashy or expensive jewelry, no wallet, money in front pocket, etc. True anywhere you travel, not just Costa Rica.

See you guys Friday at the SL. I'll be the Cuban guy with the speedos, huge gold chain with the huge cross, rolex, no shirt, and dress shoes with black socks!
