Dress has relatively little to do with it, your attitude and actions are much more important. Don't act like a loud-mouth obnoxious asshole (aka "Ugly American"), leave the typical elitist American attitude at the border, don't be drunk in public, respect the people and culture, and you'll be fine. Like you said, for most of us it's impossible to hide the fact that we're tourists, so why worry about it. Relax and have fun.

Fanny packs and backpacks--ugh, NO NO NO!! Dead give away that you are a tourist and also an easy mark
Fanny packs- of course but most young Ticos carry a backpack, in fact to take your computer out on the streets you should always use a backpack instead of a laptop case (briefcase style) which paints a BIG target.
Or if Orange is your wingman dressed in a suit then don't worry. :)

PacoLoco,

Sorry I did not explain what I meant about backpacks. Yes Ticos DO seem to always have a backpack; a small one that for the most part can be hug over one shoulder. What the Ticos laugh about is that gringos seem to always be carrying the BIG, BIG trail backpacks. My ex novia even refused to leave the house with me one time when I was going to use my large backpack. She said "no way, everyone will know you are a gringo"

Pacifica55 is right. Most of us look like gringos no matter what we wear. The thing to keep in mind about cargo shorts is that the ticas can fondle your nuts while you're deciding who to take for a spin.

[quote="BangBang57"] If you MUST have a watch, buy a $3 throw away in walmart. DO NOT BUY A "ROLEX" FROM THE STREET VENDORS IN FRONT OF THE REY!!

On my last trip I purchased a Rolex watch just outside of the Del Rey for only $50. The tico I purchased it from said it was worth $3000. So I paid for my trip with just one street purchase    Guess I'm a pretty good businessman

Hankkh

And the businessman of the year award goes toooooooo :!: :!: :!: :P :P :P And now you can afford to come back  jejeje

In all seriousness, the reason I included that was last week I had a newbee tell me "the Rolexes must be stolen or they could not sell them that cheap." It apparently had never crossed his mind that they were fake

Tico's don't wear shorts as a rule so guys wear long pants to "blend".

Agreed here... Even if you may look gringo regardless of your clothes, you'll be taken a lot more seriously outside of the gulch if you don't look like a tourist.

Yes, I'll go out on a limb and state there's a difference between gringo and tourist here.

This last trip I saw a guy from the U.S. wearing shorts, sporting a fanny pack on his hip, on the other hip he had a neon yellow cell phone holder, aound his neck he had a neck safe worn on the outside of his shirt, also sunglasses with a neon yellow neon colored neck strap, and a sunvisor cap, the kind you wear at the beach.

Theres blending in, theres being comfortable and then theres putting a target on yourself that says rob me blind!!

And how about the guy I saw several times this week: 250+ lbs.,Hawanian type shirt, cargo shorts, sandals, and worse of all, a hat with 3-4 plum feathers sticking out of it. Surprised ALL the muggers and panhandlers were not running over each other to get to him first  :?

OH! maybe the 250+ lbs scared them off 8) Or maybe he never walked out of the REY

And people wonder why gringos are laughed at in other countries
