C'mon, PR - you are way too sharp a guy (and too smart) not to realize this And to not support ignorance.

There is a thread going on now - might be still active, I don't know - about do we think Ticos hate us - I think far too many come down with the idea all they want to do is get drunk, and see how many TICA's they can f.u.c.k - many of these guys are not, ahem, world travelers, and have not been far out of Bugtussle in their life. If they want to let their hair down a little, great, I personally have zero problem with that - but I do have a problem with them trying to sound "cool", "in the know" "sharper than you really are" - and it often starts with the (mis) use of the CR word for female.

I think if a guy is told the correct term, and chooses to mis use it, well, no cure for dumb

So a little info on how not to maybe look dumb (and how not to get their ass kicked perhaps in a Tico bar ) is in order - said it many times, the name of this site is a large contributor to the confusion.

Rocky, call them what you wish - but please don't put CR (and most of the rest of the world, with the exception of the USA ) down for having a sane policy when it comes to prostitution. You have it backwards - probably your entire post, in fact - they get offended when Tica is used as a term for <all> whores - you can understand that.

Their tolerance for prostitution is based on/for the convenience of the local population, and certainly not to "lure" gringo's (Same with casino's - they have 'em, but if you are into the whole Casino experience, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and a whole bunch of Indian controlled gambling properties are far more compelling)

And you will find that prostitution in CR is limited to a very small percentage of the population, and that population is smaller still in its number of Costa Ricans, and smaller in the number of venues frequented by most foreign visitors.

Start out your trip with a respectful attitude, its a great place to visit and I'm betting you will want to return

Guys, Do you think maybe this Rocky dude is just trying to stir up trouble on the CRT website. He's not added much other than disparaging comments to long term contributing members. Do you think The Admin needs to receive a heads up to look into Rocky's unpaid CRT membership since he just came on in April 5, 2014? If you do, then send The Admin a PM asking him to address the situation.

As hall monitor I will have to come down on you very hard for your flagrant disregard of the proper use of the term, "tica".

You of all people should know that using "tica" as a generic term for "puta" (i.e. "whore" for those of you who are language-challenged) can be actually dangerous to your health.

All joking aside, the point has always been to let people know what it really means, plus give them some well-intended advice on why it's not a great idea to refer to whores as "ticas" ESPECIALLY when you're talking to ticos.

When going to a new place, most new guys are grateful instead of boorish about receiving advice from folks who have been there before him. If after receiving said advice the newly educated n00b still insists on using "ticas" as a synonym for "puta", at that point we've done our mongerish duty and it's time to let Darwinism take its course.

Now, it so happens the contrarians will go down to SJO, walk up to every tico they meet, and ask them if it bothers them when gringos refer to whores as "ticas". It's likely 9 out of 10 will say, "No" or simply give them a blank stare of incomprehension. The tenth guy might be the problem: "WTF gringo pendejo, what you trying to imply" and so on and so forth.

By the way, the same concept applies to "paisas" or "dominicanas". Go down to SDQ and start asking dominicanos where you can find "dominicanas" (when you really mean whores) and see what happens.
