I am traveling to CR solo for couple days prior to hooking up with larger group of gringos. Being a former marine, I would like to bring a 3-4" knife for defense in case of issue. Does anyone know if carrying a pocket knife is legal in CR and what problems having that might pose?

Translation: I am an ex marine and I am bringing a big knife with me to Costa Rica. Who wants to hang out and drink with me?

NO THANKS!

In fact please publish your planned itinerary in advance so I can avoid the imminent blood bath.

To my feeble mind, a legit question was asked then authoritatively answered in the next 2 posts. Most of the rest seems to be ego-feeding or miscellaneous ya-ya.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Q--"Can I/ should I bring an edged weapon to Costa Rica?" A--NO! More trouble than it's worth and may substitute for common sense. If you need the comfort of personal protection, non-lethal defenses (stun guns, pepper spray) are available locally.

BTW If you don't believe Brother Don Rico's last sentence, read the news reports on what those Devil Dogs are doing to the Taliban in/ near Marja, Afghanistan. The tradition lives and thrives!

Good one Jazzbo..I agree, I got my answer the first couple of posts. Frankly Im not looking for a fight when I go there, being a recon marine I always like to be aware of my environment and what options I have. I used to do some ops in Central America and pretty much know the scene, was mainly curious of the legalities surrounding pocket knives. Pops pretty much hooked me up there. You can bring, but if shake down happens you may pay a fee. If involved in a scrapper, I dont think it would matter if you had a weapon or not. If a gringo one the fight period, the policia will haul your butt to the slammer. Beauty of a blade(knife) is you can get a good slice to the arm make the prick pass out in 30 seconds and at the most get a aggrevated assault charge ;-).

In regards to my fellow brethen in Marja..They finally realized the Army SF boys couldnt get the job done, so they sent in the best of the breed... OOH RAH !!

Amigo,

I wouldn't carry a knike in CR. Be aware of your sorroundings, always take a taxi at night, never carry large amounts of money, carry a photocopy of passport with stamp. Exercise caution and common sense! El que busca problemas, los encuentra.

Panadero said it all--no need to recap. But Brother Blueeyedcbr--Tha Army SF has a bifurcated (2-pronged) mission--and the primary one is village/nation building. They are superior war fighters when they have to be. The mission of ALL Marines is "To close with and destroy the enemy". No ambiguity there. And no rebuilding either.

I have a CHL so I carry a concealed handgun in the states, and a knife (legal, under 3"). Plus artillery in the trunk of my car. I never go looking for a fight but I want to be the survivor who can tell the police what happened and not the one going to the morgue.

But I don't carry anything when traveling abroad. I just learn the lay of the land, try to be smart and avoid trouble. In most places, there's just too much risk being caught by la policia as a foreigner and if you have any weaons it will be bad luck for you. I'd rather hand over the $100 I carry around with me than to face murder charges here in CR and have to go to jail and fight the charges.
