Knowledge of Spanish: How critical is it for a first-timer

I have been twice and speak very little spanish. Everybody tells me my accent stinks. But I had a great time. I have found that most of the tourist mini vans have drivers that speak fluent english. And they seem to be happy to take you around for the same price as taxi's.

I have met several east indians from the NJ area on my last trip. One was a regular to CR. You may run into a few here and there.

I'm actually travelling to India on business in a month and am sooo looking forward to the night club scene. I hear from my Indian buddy that they die for gringos.

Concerning crib sheets.... it depends on the circumstance. If I whipped out a crib sheet in front of my favoritas, they would friggin' laugh their asses off. Pero hablo un poco Espanol.

If there is a communication issue, I have found something pretty cool. I have a booked called Spanish for Gringos. You can use it to learn English and Spanish. I'll whip it out on occaison. The chicas love it because it helps them learn English too. Its well illustrated. In fact, i know a chica, who speaks perfect english, use the exact same book to teach her little sister to speak english. Its worth $19. My last trip... I spent several hours on the beach using it to teach my chica a few important things in english. She loved it.

Enjoy your trip to India. The P4P scene is plentyand cheap. Its all the better if you have contactcs there. Mumbai and Bangalore are the places to be.

I have actually printed out the contents of the web site I posted, and taken it to the HDR with me. It can be a nice ice breaker, and a good way to open a discussion about more esoteric services. (Greek etc...) Many of the chicas just get a kick out of talking about the different words and phrases used in other spanish speaking countries that they are not familiar with. I also like to play a little game I call "grope and tell" where I start naming body parts in spanish and touching each I can name, then I get her to tell me the ones I don't know, and I make sure and familiarize myself with them.

It really evokes the motherly instinct in the chicas, and makes for some great gfe.

I've had more than one young lady spend the night with me in San Jose.
A couple just rolled up in the covers next to me without either of us even mentioning staying all night.

I wonder if that would have been possible if I had not had some ability to speak some Spanish?

I doubt it was because I am some young stud (over 50, short, with glasses) and I don't over pay them.

The time spent "getting to know them" in the Del Rey or Key Largo (along with a little dancing) is a great investment for later activities but if you can't communicate at least on a basic level you will soon be "just another gringo".

Now you're telling me I need to learn to dance!? I dance like an arthritic bull elephant with a severe hernia, and a Caucasian bull elephant at that. Does this mean i have to hire hand Solo to teach me the fine art of Latin dance? I don't think even handy has that much patience. :roll:

Unfortunately for you the 2nd link is to a thread that actually discusses the speaking devices but it is only accessible to VIP's. A better use of your money would be to sign up for the $39 VIP membership rather than to lay out $400 for a device of questionable worth.
