Dear Newbie:
1.) Get the CRT-V.I.P. membership; you'll then save $8.00 or so per hour visit to ZB.
2.) With all due respect to Grey Ghost, I think a discussion of tipping is worthwhile. As someone else wrote in this thread, at ZB I just hand the girl the 20K and wave off the change. This seems to set a very nice mood, but is in fact nearly a 12% tip up front. I also gave small gifts (sample perfumes and lotions, candy, cigarettes) as extra gratuity to my favoritas.
I think that over-tipping does raise the expectations of the girls, and frankly, some of us certainly can't afford the legendary Daniel-San$100.00 Tip. Overtipping has led to increased expectations, therefore reduced service all over the U.S. Look around.
I think a general rule of thumb is to give tips commensurate with the perceived quality of the session. If you're an old, fat, balding, half-drunk gringo who is getting laid for the first time in 40 years by a hot 20 year-old, it may be well worth an exhorbitant tip. As for me, I will offer between 10 and 20% of the total bill, and only for extraordinary service.
Speculation: I believe the ZB girls pay the house $18.00 per hour visit. I also believe that they eat the C.R.T. discount; this is based on discussions with a couple ZB girls. In other words, she makes $20.00 for a discounted hour, and $29.00 for an undiscounted session. But this is not Gospel and hasn't been verified; frankly, the girl's cut is none of my business and has little to do with how much or how little, I tip.
Bad reasons to tip:
1.) "She has such a hard life." Oh really!? Her sisters are slaving picking coffee beans at 1/5 her hourly rate. Yep, she has it tough.
2.) "We have so much and ticas have so little." Yes, true. And they often live as well (in terms of human happiness and things that matter) than we do. The standard of living in Costa Rica is lower and less expensive, so what we want to do is to artificially increase both the economy and standard of living. That way, when chica gets too old to sell panocha, she can starve more quickly?
3.) "It's my money and I'll phucking do what I want with it." Okay, so why not spend your money giving machine guns to epileptics? It is after all, your money...screw the consequences of your largesse.
4.) "It makes me feel good." Do you feel good when you overpay for something in the U.S.? "Yeah, the waitress kinda sucked, the food arrived cold, but damn! I feel great for leaving a 30% tip" Smart.
5.) "Tipping improves service." Prove it. I mean, prove it statistically for Costa Rican sex workers. Many of these women are clueless, addicted, mentally ill, exhausted by their work, cynical about gringos, name your disability... whether or not you tip large may or may not affect service level. Of course, everyone has anecdotes that demonstrate better service for bigger tips, and some of these anecdotes come from more experienced veterans than I...but I still say it's pretty nebulous to try and figure out if your big tips are doing any good.
And tipping a BM/HDR/KL girl? Well, if I haven't been able to negotiate her down to $80.00 or lower for 90 minutes, the tip is built in to her already exhorbitant price schedule. But I'm cheap...
Guys, just use common sense. The girls in my opinion are surprised when they receive a good tip, as it is not the norm to tip in C.R. except very small amounts in very specific cases, but G.G. is right...I've got no business telling anyone what to tip. And BTW, despite the preceding post, I do tip, and probably too generously. I also give to beggars...too nice a guy, I guess.
