It will be best to stay in san jose for the first visit. Plenty to do.
Book half day or full day tours after you get there.
Book your room ASAP at SL. If full book at La Amistad or Castillo.
If you want to play golf ask your hotel to book a tee time at "Valle del sol" golf course in Santa Ana.
Green fees are $69 and rent clubs for about $30. Reserve for the morning as it may rain in the afternoon.
Taxi or Urber to the course. It is a really nice course. You can check it out on line , just google Valle del sol, CR.

Thanks for the suggestions on the excursions- I saw that SL has clubs they can loan for free if available too....I am booked at SL in El Mono room for the week....totally stoked

If you are active and in good shape, white water rafting is also a hoot.
