Mongers really have to be hard up if they stay in a hotel with a shared bathroom.

I received an email from Darren at the Castillo in response to my question about wifi. He said the wifi is operational, but, as I previously stated, the signal is weak or non-existent in some rooms at some times.

Yeah, when I inquired I was told the same thing. 2 people staying there had the same comment--"In a week have not been able to connect to the internet in the rooms, only outside where the tables are or in the common area, and even then not all the time". One had better luck when he used a signal booster!!!

Maybe it is "working" but I sure would not depend on being able to connect to the internet based on what I have heard and seen. If it is suppose to provide ALL clients with internet access and is not , I am not sure I would call that "working"!!!! A good router costs less than $100!!!! or even a couple of signal boosters strategically placed might solve the problem.

I am not trying to knock the Castillo; I like the hotel and hate to see it having problems. I just think that in this day and time, and even in Costa Rica, WIFI access should not be that difficult of a problem!!

Excellent info BD! Your posts are saving me a lot of time & trouble. After the message post from La Amistad, I will certainly stay there IF I can get the weekly CRT discount for the all-inclusive. I don't plan on eating there every meal, but certainly breakfast and some dinners.

I don't care about a hotel's WIFI.

For WIFI in CR, I use a cheap "Data Card" or "Air Card" that I plug into the side of my laptop. It uses a SIM card for internet access. The service on the SIM card for a month costs about $18 from Movistar. You can buy service by the week for less money.

The speed is pretty fast from Movistar. I can use it anywhere, even on the bus (if I were daring enough to give my laptop the "light of day" on a bus).

I presume that you can get internet access on a smart phone through the cell phone companies, but I have a DUMB PHONE, so I don't know about that. I never want to have a phone that is smarter than I am.

what is the brand of air-card that works quad band? I typically use my phone, and the last trip I was able to hotspot for Matt and Marco. But having a dedicated device for it would be a thought.

Bash.....

I use an old Sierra Wireless AirCard 875U, with a SIM card from Movistar in my Apple laptop.

They sell on EBAY for $5 - $20.

Sorry but the discount only applies to room rates. The all inclusive rate is what it is.

Breakfast is included in all our rates regardless, as well as free transport to the airport if staying 4 nights or more, The all inclusive price is not available with the discount. If you have any questions call the hotel toll free at 1-877-260-3027

regards
Matt

The All-Inclusive is a huge discount. Ask anyone that has used it. It also helps to 'schedule' the trip, as you know you'll have dinner at LA, and it makes an excellent gathering point for the evenings hunt.

For people like me who wander, not so much. I never know where I am at dinnertime: San Pedro, Escazu, Lindora. I miss out on too many 'free' lunches and dinners. For me, the CRT discount (especially 25% weekly) is the best option, and as I always have at least 1 wingman taking the All-Inclusive, I am eating there several times a trip anyway.

properly updated La Amistad prices.

Folks, getting PM's about the 13%. It's state taxes. Most places have cash deals, but no one has actually claimed that they do not collect the 13%. Always expect the tax-portion of the bill, and that is why it is reflected in my listing.

I would never post publicly that a place agrees to waive a required tax charge, and *to be clear*: NO place has ever suggested that they don't collect it.

I would bet that a few of the trannies in the park would let you spend a few nights with them for free.
