I walked Moscow (obviously not the whole damned city), but at least there a tourist can get suitably armed.
I walked London (a good portion of the Zone 0 and Zone 1), and never felt the need to be armed (though East of Brick Lane gets pretty worrisome after dark).
I"m looking forward to seeing San Jose.

The most violent country in Europe is the UK. No, it's not the one you are thinking of, it is UK. Look it up.

In other words, the monger map shows a group of MPs around Avenida 8 and Calle 2. Is it safe to wander around there?
What should be the North (South,East,West) most streets for a good (meaning safe) wander-about?
I'll do my best to notate stuff on the map so someone more knowledgeable can properly update the damned thing.

The only places that you need to walk to are the main MP's (HLH, NF, and Idem). And the freelance places (SL, HDR, KL). 99% of the talent in the Tico MP's is not worth a second look. Even if you do find that "diamond in the rough", do you really want to deal with those facilities? Cold showers, dirty sheets, stained mattresses, no towel or worse- sharing towel with previous customers, typical 3rd world facility. They are a huge waste of time in my opinion.

Personally, I try to avoid walking the streets as much as possible. It's relatively safe, but you can be robbed anywhere anytime. The less that I'm in the streets, the lower the chance of that happening. Taxis are dirt cheap and everywhere. Why chance it, no matter how remote it is. I'm not gonna let $2 ruin my vacation.

Obviously, if you like walking, go ahead but stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings.

Does anybody like going to Pirate Club? I heard they have some nice talent. I usually like to walk everywhere, but that might be one place I splurge for a taxi.

At night, alone, late.....you are better off taking a taxi - San Jose is not a safe place at night, especially if you are not familiar with it, taxi's are cheap, so you are better off safe than sorry, especially over a $4 taxi ride.

Well from personal experience, the Dominican area - Best Western Downtown, is a very bad place to go at night on foot. If you happen to walk in, I imagine they will happily be waiting for you when you decide to walk out.

Really IMO nothing over there in my experiences even worth going.

The government cleaned this Dominican area problem up not too long ago and no where near as scary as it used to be in that area. I would agree, still not an area to walk alone during the day or even in a large group at night. Much larger police presence in the area up until about 8-10pm but after that, that area is very dangerous.

And have to respectfully disagree. Calle 6 can be entertaining and every now and then there is a semi-hot girl to be found in one of the four 'doors of death'. Central Market is also on Calle 6 and Avenida 0 and that is always worth a look. Late night you should NOT be walking in this area however, Bar Monoco on the north end of Calle 6 and Le Grillion which is just south of Avenida 1 on Calle 6 are definitely worth a visit.

Gotta say, Mister Orange, that I found many doable chicas (and did em too) outside the IDEM-SL-HLH triangle. Newbies should check out Calle 6, especially the one where they're just in panties, showing the wares.
And, anyone who skips 360 is jus' plain STOOPID!

I walked the entire map ... never felt threatened ... that said, ask Mattyice about the dead body around the corner. He's like " Where the f*ck are we?" ... I'm like "off the map! Keep walking brother!"

Haha, yeah, why else would somebody be lying supine, fully clothed, across the entire sidewalk in direct sunlight. I was looking for the bullet wounds, but then I figured we better get the hell out of there.

I had a great day with ya, Bash. I definitely owe you some lunches and beers.
