I know I'm wack but I'd go to a thrift shop or two before travelling and get a bunch of scarves, better costume jewelry or purses, and give 1 each of their choice to the housekeeping staff on their morning break. Cash is always welcome but this personalizes giving a bit and doesn't take up much space in my luggage.

Good thread and some good pointers. Also keep in mind that the maids work for about $15 a day in salary. They are living on the bare minimum. The tips we leave can make a real difference to them. In other words if they go home with $10-$15 in tips they doubled their meager salary. the $2-$3 a day is nothing for most of us and is really appreciated by them.

$5 a day is a standard in many places.

I don't see what the rating or ranking of a hotel or area has to do with giving a decent tip to a hard working poor worker!

Excellent post and replies.
The maids at the Morazon are hard working, and they truly appreciate a little tip, but also showing them appreciation and respect goes a long way.
I make it a point to tidy the place up before I leave, so they dont think I'm such a degenerate slob. (lol) The same ones remember me over the years because I personally give them 2-4k when i check in and ask for more towels right away, then leave coins each day, and seek them out in person, with another 2-4k before checking out.

x2. Always do this myself. Canada has $1 & $2 coins & I still never have half as many of them as I do 100 colone coins.

If you have coins in Canada, how do you tip strippers? They surely must be difficult to get in the g-string. I guess you could just lob them into her pie. (I've done that with small coins in Bangkok) Extra points if you can bounce them in.

Dude, only suckers & K*ds tip strippers & they use the coins or if they're ultra-stupid, a $5 or $10 bill. Thankfully, Canada's strip clubs are a lot more liberal than those south of our border, with certain exceptions. Not really my scene anymore, but fs is readily available if you're looking for it.

I tip on an "as needed" basis. Basic service I consider your job and part of my per night stay. I dont understand the argument of "Oh well she has to clean up your dirty condoms", Im sure she knew what her job would entail before she got there, everyone has aspects of their job they dont like.

However, any additional requests whether it be additional towels, a late cleaning or an additional cleaning, I always shoot them a few bucks.

5 bucks a day are you kidding. Its your money, but would be considered excessive. Only way someones getting 5$ out of me is if the pizza man gets here in 20 minutes

I disagree, usually the whole out of control tipping thing in the US, grates on me. But tipping notell maids is really good karma IMHO. I hate tipping the worthless guys that put you in the cabs at the casinos in Vegas, or the officious maitre'd's. But those maids in the Cr hotels deserve something every day, not excessive, but something because they clean up your nastiest sh*t and your... precious bodily fluids.

If you leave condoms anywhere but the trash can, you are a lowlife or a ch-ild.

Do you also leave shit on the bathroom floor as opposed to the toilet ?
