I actually sent SL an email and they do have some rooms available (standard large/courtyard, standard deluxe/modern wing, and a Jr Suite in the courtyard). What is the overall consensus on the rooms they still have available?

Standard Large / Courtyard means Paz, Amor, or similar. Typically 59-69 per night before CRT discount. Very close to the bar, if you're a light sleeper you don't want these.

JR Suite Courtyard - Tranquilidad or Esperanza. Not really a suite, just a larger room. You are literally next to the bar. Not a good choice if you are a light sleeper, but if you are an early riser no big deal.

Standard Deluxe / Modern Wing typically means Hermosa, Las Palmas, Vista del Sol, etc. Better choice if you like to be close to the action but not right in the middle of it. Rooms are slightly larger and removed from the hubbub.

Sweet spot - ask if Amante, Del Mar, El Rey or Las Palmas in the modern wing are available. If you don't mind spending a little more, ask for the Presidente Suite (a real suite). 109/night but its large, has a separate living room with two sofas, 2 LCD TVs, a huge bathroom with jacuzzi and shower stall. Or ask if they have a Mansion room available.

Great review, MH. When I was a newbie and trying to book rooms at the SL I wish I had had your list.
Also real good of you to do this because many guys don't want to list their favorite rooms for fear that someone else will book them. At SL, I know that advance planning is key.

Well VIP membership now in affect... this is going to be excellent and I'm super excited about this adventure.

I'm hoping to have my room booked in the next day or two.... and I'm just waiting to hear back from the SL.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and help everyone!

Mikey

Well I'm now confirmed at the SL in the Del Mar room for my stay. I guess all that's left is the wait, arranging transportation from the airport and brushing up on my Spanglish.

Thanks again everyone!

So instead of starting a new thread, I'll just ask my additional question in this one. My apologies in advance if it's already been asked/answered before.

Any chance of finding chicas in the usual spots who might be a bit more rock and roll/alternative in appearance and perhaps attitude? I'm really referring to fashion wise, tattoos, piercings, etc and in overall vibe. OK, perhaps that's a bit of a strange question now that I see it all typed out. What can I say? It's my thing! :-)

Not strange at all. You just described one of my favoritas to a T. :)

That's actually not an uncommon type in SJO, especially among the younger chicas. Just go to HDR on a weekend night. You'll find a few - some might be covering up the tats cause they know some mongers don't like or are intimidated by the look. Or go check out Rock Latino, about a 5 minute taxi drive from the SL.

Thanks. Just paying it forward. :)

I'm not part of the selfish group. The more people patronize Bill's place, the better IMO.

Not strange at all; in fact to take Brother LaDiablo's answer to a further place, here's a list of tattoo studios in San Jose--how cool would that be to get a new tat in a country probably NONE of your buds have been? And while you're there--you go fishing where the fish are, not where you hope they'll be, right? And women get tats too so therefor... http://www.everytattoo.com/costarica.shtml << La Fortuna is a bit of a ride (near Mt. Arenal--a nice TLN if you hook up strong); the others in/near town, and I've heard 506 Tattoo mentioned favorably elsewhere.
Brother you're gonna kill'm (in a good way).

Well that's quite an interesting idea and certainly would make my first trip more memorable for sure... Hmmm might actually have to consider a little ink perhaps.

I glanced through the posts, so if it has already been said, sorry...

One of the first things to do when you get into your room is remove anything that you don't want to pay for out of the fridge. If you do not, you will pay for it later. I use one of the dresser drawers. You can then put things in you have purchased at Mas or Menos that you do not mind if they "take". On my first trip this was about a $50 lesson. The ladies do not consider it stealing, just like the legislators of California, they consider it a value added tax. Keep everything locked in the safe when you bring a lady to your room.

Health & happiness to all..............

+1.

This is huge and bears repeating. I was not sure if I should remove the stuff in the fridge because the stuff in there is cold and I didn't want to "spoil" the product. However, upon second consideration those remaining fridge items take up a lot of space that you could fill up with your own stash of drinks/snacks. Of course, you want to hide the dry snack goods in a drawer as well.

Also, think about some things that may be of value to a Chica. Things like toothpaste(yes, even toothpaste), scents, lotions and shower caps. I brought a few shower caps with me on my last trip so that I could shower with the girls and they not be worried about wetting their long, gorgeous, black hair :D. After engaging with one such Chica she asked me if she could have one of the caps? No problem, Chica! These women would go so much farther with us if they simply asked rather than steal or simply assume that what's yours is theirs.

Finally, for all of the SL modern wing rooms that get consistent mention, there are several that don't. Why is that? I'm staying in the Mirador room just up from the stairs. I took a glance last time and loved the large window looking out to the street and the zoo trees. Oh well, I come for me and my happiness, the Chicas can take care of themselves  .
